I'm looking to buy a small screwdriver set, something like 5-10 pieces, preferably under $50 to build my small tool collection. I have no problem buying used, but can never seem to find any good deals.

Here are the ones I'm considering:
Craftsman Professional 5-pc. Heavy Duty Screwdriver Set for $40

Wiha 5 Piece Heavy Duty Cushion Grip Screwdrive Set on sale for about $40

Blue-Point 7 pcs. Combination Screwdriver Set for $60

This is the set I'd really like to buy, but just can't justify it, atleast not yet atleast!
8 pcs. Instinct Hard Handle Screwdriver Combination Set

As always, I'm open to any and all suggestions, even offers if you have something you'd sell to a young aspiring tool collector...

Thanks for the help
-Curtis

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Is KD made by Gearwrench?

JH Williams looks like a good deal

I like the look of the Felo hard handled set, looks like a good deal

What is the general consensus on SK? I found this set, SK 6 Piece SureGrip Slotted Screwdriver Set, it seems like its a good deal, but I'm not sure. I'll have to research it some more and see what I can come up with about SK

Keep the suggestions coming!

I've got Wiha small drivers and I love them.. super quality stuff. The blades are good quality steel, etc.

I also own a ton of S/O stuff.. personally I'd skip the BP or C-man pros (I've seen recent complaints on here about newly purchased pro stuff tearing up the tips).

I have the Craftsman Pro set, bought last year I think half price about $29, and while a couple were junk, return was easy and will be for a LONG time, plus its a full set of 10 or so sizes and types.

The Wiha heavy duty with metal striker on the top are very nice, image below.

Eventually I will have a full set of Snapon hard handles bought used for $5 to $10 each.

Fair chance I will still be grabbing the HF cheapos when they are handy.

These would be my choice

Toptul's "Go-Thru" screwdriver set. They run about $35 not including the garagejournal discount WrenHandsTools and Ultimategarage offer us.

http://www.wrenhandtools.com/master_sets/screwdriver_wrench_plier_sets_for_trolleys.html

Here is a review of Toptul's screwdrivers.

I would stay clear of the Bluepoint screwdriver set you linked to. I bought a 7 piece set before and only one survived after a year (and they were not abused at all.)

The williams screwdrvers are def. the best imo. Just like the snap on for way less! The tips are extremely strong and durable and i've been using mine daily at toyota for a while now and they have absolutely no sign of wear!

Servus, Curtis,

Which types of screwdrivers do you need? Pozidriv, Phillips, slotted, Torx?
Personally, I'd rather get a large selection of good-quality screwdrivers than only a few top-notch drivers. Don't get me wrong, I'd definitely opt for quality tools. I simply suggest that you might be better off with eight or ten Wera Kraftform Comfort drivers than with six Wera Kraftform Plus drivers, for example.

Hope this helps,

Chreese

I would definitely take a look at Toptul's go thru drivers. I'll be placing an order for some in a few weeks, if those tips are half as strong as they appear they'll be worth their weight in gold.

+1 I bought a set of Toptuls out of curiosity. They are quite nice for the $$. I prefer my SO's but they Toptuls are still a great deal.

that would be my choice in your price point.

But, as usual it really depends on what you like.

I third it. Amazon has it for $29 too.

I have this set purchased from amazon.com and absolutely love it. I like them so much I bought a second set just to keep in the rack for looks. I run a motorcycle salvage business on the side. I see my fair share of stuck and stripped phillip bolts. These seem to fit better and really get a good bite. The only problem is the set does not come with larger ones.

Some great choices here. The Wera and the ebay linked hard handle copies are superb choices. I tend to break screwdrivers as I work on old rusty stuff so ease of replacement should factor in too.

I like the Felo handles over the Wera but they are both super nice screwdrivers. I have not tried the Wihas but I will one day, when the money comes.

There's a Craftsman professional 10pc set that goes on sale for $40-$50, but as of recently, I do NOT recommend it.

In your price range, I'd recommend Wiha or Wera.

Do they just not hold up? Got two sets in the packaging still that I can return if they are not good.

I used the P2 driver for the first time, and the tip totally deformed. Granted I was driving drywall screws, but I wasn't camming out, and wasn't doing anything that I used other screwdrivers for in the past.

Please post a review after you have had a chance to use the Williams. Curious to hear what other folks think about them.

Good God Chicken Little, what's your definition of a "real business?" The seller listed has been a brick-and-mortar tool dealer since 1947. So selling on eBay somehow guarantees screwdrivers will fall out of the package?

Quit trying to make the guy paranoid.

Sorry, I didn't look up the particular ebay auction, I've just had nothing but problems there and chose to stop shopping there a couple years ago, seems no real businesses operate there, or at least continue to operate there very long.

If you want toptul you should order from the guy on here that operates a store, I'm sure he'll make sure you have the best price. That ultimate garage thing looks hokey.

Oh I do plan on ordering from Mike if he has it. The only reason I posted that link was because it is not on Mike's site.

Steve, the owner of www.Ultimategarage.com is also a member here as well. His user name is Ultgar. I placed an order with Steve a few weeks back and can attest that Steve is running a legitimate business. His service is quite well too.

Both Mike Wren ( www.wrenhandtools.com ) and Steve offer us Garagejournal members 20% off all Toptul products (Steve also offers a 10% discount on the Facom tools he sells too.)

Good to know, I just have seen the wren guy and I haven't seen anything bad in the posts about him and wanted to steer people his way... No harm to the Ultimate Garage guy... :)
