Does NEC allow the mounting if a 2-gang thermoplastic box using screws inside the box into the stud? Do I need to tape over screw heads? I have found the nails don't hold box in place after heavy usage. Thanks.

The better route for you in this situation is to use boxes that already have what you are thinking already built in. You would have to pick these up at a electrical supply house being big chain stores don't carry boxes like these. http://www.aifittings.com/catalog/fan-and-fixture-boxes/one-box-non-metallic-outlet-boxes/ Some folks call them smart boxes. I've used these a lot doing remodeling work in my home dealing with loose electrical boxes or installing new old work boxes. The only thing about these things that I don't like is that they use a plastic pull through style strain relief for the romex and in a retrofit type installation getting everything right is kinda tough. In that case I've actually taken a regular screw down strain relief and installed in the box upside down so that once I got the box where I wanted it and secured, then I would tighten the strain relief from the inside.
