I am a metal sculptor who is seeking to move to somewhere where I can have a larger shop/studio. At this point, we are looking in the Fort Collins, Colorado area. We just made an offer on a place with one acre and a 3 car garage, but the owner has a somewhat inflated view of what the place is worth. We will continue to look.
I have been doing some general research, assuming that I would build a 30 by 40 shop, or something similar. This could be a metal building, if that fits into the neighborhood. I plan to aim for good natural light, with window area 15 to 20% of the floor area. There will definitely be some north windows, for the desirable north light. Probably a gable roof, with half of it facing south, for possible future solar use.
I am trying to avoid HOAs, for obvious reasons. But if the neighborhood already has barns, I might be able to work with an HOA to build an barn/studio. So many of the neighborhoods have no outbuildings. The satellite photos save me from driving to places that obviously would not work.
My sculptures can be seen at www.fergusonsculpture.com.
