hello and good morning everybody. have seen a lot of talk about putting water on concrete to test for the presence of a sealer. does anybody have any pictures to compare the two ? my new garage floor does not appear to be sealed but the water seems to sit on the surface for a few minutes but not really bead. want to be sure I have to correct prep before I use the Legacy products I have coming in a few days . I do a lot of car detailing so I know what water beading looks like so I Would think newly sealed concrete may appear the same ? thanks

You mentioned that it is new. Any chance you can contact the contractor and ask him?

I am going to ask him what they concrete guys usually do for him. I was there the day they finished up the garage and they just made their last couple of passes with the machine they were using on it . was hoping that I could be certain ( aka the test ) before starting laying the Ultimate Clear Sealer System from Legacy. the picture at the bottom of the link I have included is sealed concrete and what I imagine would happen if it was sealed in any manner at this point. when I poured water on the concrete it turned a dark color fairly quick but the larger puddle did not seep in after 5 minutes but the smaller sample ( size of a quarter ) was pretty much gone .

Have you done anything to prep the concrete yet or are you asking because you plan on using an acid etch instead of grinding?

I have done anything to the garage floor yet as we are closing on the house in 10 days. once we close we are going to take 2-3 weeks to move in . this gives me ample time to apply and let dry ( the kit that I purchased ) to be honest I hope that I will not have to do any grinding with the sealer kit that I purchased. just looking to see if I really need any other prep if there is no sealer there. the first two coats from Legacy will be the Standard Epoxy Clear Sealer, followed by a coat of the HD356VOC Clear Urethane.

Hmmmm.... Did you do much research about what's required to install an epoxy coated floor? You are going to need to acid etch your floor at a minimum if not grind it (most preferred) in order to achieve the proper profile for epoxy to adhere properly. Unfortunately you can't just sweep the floor of a new garage and just start putting it on.

Here are the instructions for the kit you purchased. They are on the Legacy website. Read the part about preparing the surface. I suggest you read those first and then you are probably going to have more questions to follow.

A search here about how to install epoxy floors might be a good start.

I did look at a lot of the posts on the board and checked out the legacy site. I have no problems with using the acid etch and was hoping that would be enough to prep the floor. was going to go over my prep ideas with legacy before starting the process. guess I figured that the colored epoxy needed to be grinded and the sealer that I chose would not really need it on a new floor that was not already sealed.I shyed away from the colored epoxy with flakes as I did not want to spend the cash and time grinding . so what you are saying is unless I grind , I am going to have some heavy paperweights lol . live and learn I guess.

Flatstick:

A proper acid etching will be fine.
Here is a link:

Thanks for the confirmation on only needing the acid etch for my situation. my post was just me looking for a couple of pictures, not sure how we got onto the subject of prep. anyhow I was going to be contacting Legacy about my plan for the prep once the products arrive. have to talk to the contractor as all of the talk of concrete guys using the cure and seal has me thinking I need to know exactly how the job was done . will not apply any product until I am certain that I will be doing it right. I did contact a guy about having it epoxied by a pro and they quoted me $12 a square foot , ouch !

12 / sq ft? :scared:

That's what I paid for my 24x36 concrete pad with footers!

Good luck with your floor. Please post pictures of progress.

update to my post. I talked to my contractor the other day and it turns out the concrete crew he uses was across the street finishing up a basement pour. talked to the head guy and he said no sealers were applied to my garage. then asked if they used a cure and seal product and he said nope ,nothing was added at all. their last step used he said was to burnish the concrete with his butterfly ( believe that is what he called it ) machine.
