Sealing Around Garage Door

I bought a house a few months ago and with winter coming I'm trying to get my place as air tight as I can.

As that can be seen in the picture I have a gap between the garage door and the wood it goes up against....what's the best way to get this to seal up?... It's also on both sides.

I see in your photo the light penetration gap your talking about, so I went outside to look at my garage door now 10 years old. My door rides against a stationary heavy flap of rubber gasket that seals the side edges of the garage door as it opens and closes. If I were you I would go to my local ACE hardware and ask what kit folks are using in your area to seal the top, sides and bottom and go from there. Probably something like this..

Thanks for the replies. Since I've become a home owner I've been learning a lot.

My 32' wide garage faces South and has 2 each 10' wide doors. I have that Home Depot gasketing as in post #2.

In winter our storms blow in from the SE to SW with some heavy winds at times which pushes the doors away from the gasket up to 3/8". Good seal with calm winds though.

One can only guess as to what kind of door you have. Some details are, you know, kinda important. If a sectional roll up, you have your answers.

For those that might find this thread and have overhead swing up doors, some old carpet on the jambs and header works well.

I just installed two sets of the Green hinges. Really helped seal my doors.

I would like to install these on both of my doors. I have been to the Green Hinge website, checked them out, and left a message to email me so I can reply to them with a pic of my setup (see below) and mfr info on the doors.

In the meantime, you're my "go to" hands-on guy. Lucky you!

My doors are fiberglass insulated with Styrofoam, 10' wide, 5 section, manufactured "locally" in Kent, WA.

In my mind's eye, I can't see how I can use the product unless I am missing something. The hinge plate and the roller plate are two separate pieces.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I can't tell a lot from your original picture, but if you have rollers as shown in post #12, the track that the rollers travel in should have a slot to allow you to adjust it in and out. After you have put the plastic or rubber seal on the opening for the door, you can fine tune it that way. You want to strike a happy medium in which you seal out the wind, but not put too much drag on the door upon opening.

I will try that if there is enough play, but I doubt it.

Just heard from Lester at Green Hinge via phone and email (sent the same pic as above).

He says it won't work for my doors.

I have been SOL before, and here's another instance.

Best part is my garage is not heated and the temps (summer to winter) vary from 80*F to 40*F as is. Not bad, but the cat spends a lot of time isolating herself from all of us (and the nosy dachshund) in the garage where she is queen of her domain and gets scared of the rattling garage doors. Oh, well, she'll just need to stay aware. LOL.

Thanks to all!

That is unfortunate as Lester's Green Hinges work great for me. Lester is as honest as the day is long, which is why he told you what he told you.

I hear you, sir. He was super prompt with both the phone and email and it sounded like talking to a neighbor. He didn't try to sell me something that would not work. Good guy IMO. I hope he does well.

I ordered and installed Green Hinges almost 2 weeks ago and I really like them. Took about 15 minutes to install and the first thing I noticed was less sound.

I'm close to a railroad crossing where they blow train horn. A train went by within minutes of closing the door and much less noise. I have an insulated Raynor door with 2 sections of windows.

Has sealed up the sides very well and am very happy. Couldn't believe how cheap the old hinges felt and they were higher end Raynor painted white. The normal winds come toward my door and now just has a little at bottom until I get a new bottom seal.

I have a separate Morton building with a 14 X 14 door that I heat and plan on looking at the hinges and how it seals. It's at another location and will look this weekend.

I would suggest anyone with an under the house garage look at how there doors seal and if there is air or rattle on the sides of garage door. If there is I'm sure these would pay for themselves in energy saving.
