I'm looking at the vinyl weatherstrip available for garage doors. While it looks like it will do an adequate job of keeping the rain out it doesn't seem like it will do much for keeping the cold out (and drafts) in the winter. I'll be conditioning the space and want to keep things as tight and insulated as possible. Anyone come up with a better way or something in addition to?

I think it's been posted on here before, but Lowes and Home Depot sell a trim piece that has a vinyl lip that pushes against the garage door. My door came with them and it does a pretty good job of sealing out the weather and drafts.

I here the strips work pretty good as long as you are driving straight into the garage. I was told
that the strips come up if you have to turn into it. I have no experience with them but I need the same thing. i am about to replace my doors

The vinyl trim pieces with the lip are the ones I'm talking about. I have those ready to install as soon as I get the doors painted. They just don't seem to be much insulation for the cold.

Granted, there isn't much insulating value to that sliver of vinyl. But it will do what it is meant for - sealing out the drafts. Beyond that, I'm not sure what you could to to actually insulate around the door...

Air leaks are much more of an issue than conduction for such a small amount of area. The sliver of vinyl might have an area 8 feet high and 1/2 inch wide, times 2 for two sides of the door.

Any membrane manages an insulation value of about R1. You have a total area of 0.67 square feet. If the inside temp is 60 and the outside is 0, you'll lose 40 BTU per hour through the two slivers. That's about 0.1 percent of the heat loss of a typical garage, or about the same amount of energy use as a plug in electric clock (12 watts).
