How do I search using a phrase? I have searched "hole saw" and get hits on "hole" and "saw" combined with "hole saw".

Agree - using google is much better. If you want an exact match use quotation marks:

Garage Journal "hole saw"

You will see only "hole saw", not "holesaw".

I always use Google for a GJ search. I recently googled "pizza garage journal" and a thread popped up over best pizza places. I love GJ.

If it's just "blind" searching for a topic on GJ, then agree to use Google.
EXAMPLE:

However, if you've posted to GJ thread and you remember a couple unique words, then Advanced Search on GJ works well for that. Thus, input the unique words you typed, and key in your UserID.

in google:

"hole saw" OR holesaw site:garagejournal.com

"hole saw" will force to have hole saw and not the words hole and saw anywher ein the page...
OR holesaw helps for various spellings or variations.
site:garagejournal.com returns only results from garagejournal.com

p.s. to exlude words, you can use a minus (-) signe in front of words.

like: tractor -lawn

For whatever reason, the search function built into GJ doesn't seem to understand words with three letters or less, like 'saw'. I think it's a function of the software, the same thing happens on other web boards using the same format. So, the Google search method will work better.
