Searching for severe duty bulbs

Hey you experts out there can anyone recommend a source for 40w light bulbs for a grinder or other heavy/shakey environment? Standard bulbs don’t last worth a hoot

if it is a standard base, you could use a Garage door opener bulb.

Grinder? The light shields for them? Try a small LED.

They had to make a special version of the incandescent bulb, called "Rough Service" or "130 volt" to withstand vibrations, voltage surges, etc., for industrial use. It had a thicker filament. Still, it was pretty weak, just because filaments dont like vibration. Compact flourescents were a little better, but still not great.
LED bulbs have no filament. They are very good in high vibration areas. A good quality LED bulb will have better solder joints and better components than a cheap one.

Many are. A lot of the best LED bulbs use glass exteriors that can shatter on impact when used on a grinder or such. Also, with grinders in particular, the grinding grit likes to embed itself in glass.

I look for LED bulbs with plastic exteriors for this reason.

Usually a grinder light lasts a couple 3 weeks... I put an LED in place of the old school light, not only does it give better light, but it's been there 3 months and keeps on lighting up.

As mentioned above "Rough Service" is the correct term.

The 130v may have thicker element, but not supported as well as RS... they are made to buy for longer life span... when connected to "120" v.

And, so usually a little less bright also.

Home Depot has rough service bulbs listed on their website, but nothing under 100 watts. Try a good local hardware store.

Some "fan light" bulbs are rough service. Check their labels for that.

Never thought about using LEDs, gonna give that a try. I’ll report back in 3 weeks or so with the results

I use PAR 20 LED bulbs in my tool fixtures (grinder and drill press). They fit the housing really well and have good light distribution.

I do the same but PAR lamps do not work well in a grinder eye shield, for that I think LED's would be ideal.
