This is a last ditch effort...
Trying to find a source for small (8 inch wide) cuts of 18" diameter schedule 80 PVC pipe. I can find 20 foot lengths of the pipe, but at $2,500 plus freight, that's a LOT more than I want to spend. As big as this site/forum is, I figure somebody knows somebody who has "drops" of 18" Sched 80 PVC.

Anybody? Needed in Richmond, VA, but inbound freight is not a problem.

I would look for a contractor that does water line installation for developers or municipalities. Or you local water department fora city or rural water district.

That's a BFP.

I'd look for water or sewer department guys around lunchtime at fast food places or convenience stores. Ask them if they deal with that pipe and if so are there cut offs. If they have some offer to buy the crew lunch for a few pieces that might otherwise end up in the trash.

thewatus has the idea.
Those are scrap sizes.
A single big box "site work" (in the ground drains) install will have plenty.

Call around to local industrial companies and find out who does their site or plumbing work. Call them to see if you can buy some "drops".

You are talking about $100 a foot, how many do you need, I know there is a company on ebay that sells it by the foot, I will look in the scrap pile, I am pretty sure I have 20" sched 40 if its still back there, I will look tomorrow..

USP sells 18" gray by the foot, I want to say its $100 per, they are going to be the cheapest. On the big jobs we would buy it buy the foot precut and just fit everything together like a puzzle. It saved us a ton of money and their cuts were perfect, but they were planned and printed jobs so there was no guessing...

I would say buy a coupling but thats probably $130 or more..

Thanks much for the lead(s)!

US Plastics does have it available at a reasonable price (plus, I have an account with them). So, will be ordering 5 1ft pieces from them tomorrow.

For those who were curious what I needed schedule 80 @ 18" diameter, it was because I need the thicker wall of the schedule 80 versus the 40. Making some more sheet metal take off cores for our rolling mill. Will be coiling 6" wide various thickness sheet strips onto these PVC cores. The large outside diameter keeps it from being too tight of a roll, distorting the strip, and the thickness keeps it from buckling with the forces of the take-up wheel. I'll post a pic tomorrow of the rolling mill in operation.

Better yet, here is a Youtube of the exact machine.

You will see the takeup rolls on the right side of the machine; big 16" aluminum wheels. We devised the cores to slip on to those wheels, so that we can remove the coil without unwinding. The core with the metal on it, then goes to the next operation. Or, it may go back on the left side of the mill and be milled further. Clear as mud, huh? Just for what its worth, that mill is over $100k. I'll still post a pic or two of the cores, just for giggles.

Here are the cores we make for the machine. White "safety sides' are just to make sure the metal does not slide off.

Thanks again

So all of the above begs the next question. You've got this really cool machine in your shop that can perform several tasks. Which of those functions are you using and what are you making with it? Nosy old cows gotta know.

Your welcome USP is my go to when I need something that the locals cant get, if they ever dont have what you are looking for give them a call, we needed a custom made polypropylene tee and they found us one that was for some farming machine but fit what we were trying to do perfectly, and it was only $98 I would have paid 10 times that , lol...

I did check and I have 20" sched 40, like 4 3-5ft pieces...

Good luck...

It is only a rolling mill; makes metal thinner, to a specified thickness. But since it "squishes it" to mate it thinner, the width gets wider also. I can only say that we make "specialty metals". Anything more than that and I would have to kill ya. LOL

Thanks for checking your stash! The USP deal fell through; they will only sell the pipe in 20 foot lengths and $450 freight to Richmod. Found one of the Ebay dealers this morning who happened to have 59-1/2" piece that he is cutting up into 5 same size lengths for me. That's gonna run right at $1,000 delivered. I can live with that!

wondering why steel cores won't work. Cost would be less.

This machine is for special, soft metals. Steel wheels run the risk of damaging the stock (Note that the wheels on the machine are aluminum; even that can damage the stock...hence strong PVC.) Plus, easy to repair the PVC if damaged, and you don't have a million dollars worth of "cores" sitting around waiting to be used for coiling.

My background is aluminum foil rolling mills. Our work rolls were 14" diameter, 84" wide. Backup rolls in the 36" diameter range. The process includes frequent grinding especially the work rolls. Our unwind drums and rewind drums (steel cores weigh about 800 lbs. Every roll that touches the aluminum is steel except for the ironing roll.

I was very surprised to see a video on youtube of the operation. That would be a big no no in my field.

Why a no no? Eon old technology. Roll mills are ancient. Computer control is the only really new application.

Computer control for mills is not really new. There are process specific applications in use today that are protected. That's the way it is still today
