ELI: thanks for the pictures and looks like you found a keeper. I'm pretty sure the D44 is a Columbian vise part # so unless you or somebody else finds a different fact or theory let's go with Columbian as being your vise's maker. ok?

do you have any BLO (boiled linseed oil)? it's my preferred treatment for nake steel or steel that has some of it's original paint on it. light coats work best and 60's -70's degrees it still takes some time to dry before it isn't sticky.

even if you put BLO on your vise several members have painted over it later if they chose to paint their vise or tools.

cheers (ice tea for this old guy)

Nice upgrade. I think you'll enjoy having a machinist vise vs. the vise it's replacing.

BC & ELI: SEARS definitely had vise companies making little (or big in the 519x models) changes to maybe see what they could sell better or that would not be returned for a refund.

remember in the past workers really didn't know any better and used BFH's on a vise just because so i bet the return rate on a warranty was huge on these old vises that should have lasted 100 years with normal use. just like a lot of guys and gals today use their vises as a press or anvil. my nephew came over to help and instead of moving an empty cardboard box wanted to run his wheelbarrow over a 100+ pound vise i had sitting on the floor. he said it's JUST A VISE.

anyway SEARS was into marketing and lasting in the business. unfortunately their lifetime warranties on good tools that were used wrong or found broken and returned for new ones finally bankrupted them.

i remember we would go to our local Sears store almost every week and maybe cause Boeing gave my dad some sort of discount or maybe just because they were the main store back in the 1960's.

The 603-3 on the swivel base is another Columbian indicator, that would be the base for a 603 3" wide jaw swivel base vise, since this is a medium duty vise that swivel was big enough.

I pulled off the jaws and cleaned them up a bit more, then smoothed out the anvil a bit. It's all mounted up and works great. I'm just going to use it for a while before I go messing with it any more. I couldn't have found a better fit for my needs, its a very solid vise with a pretty small footprint!

You got a nice vise there. No need to restore it, just use it and take care of it and fifty years from now someone else will be asking if it's a good deal.
