yea i was debating getting it for a electrolysis tank, but passed...

I suspect it would be too smart. I have one and it works great for maintaining the car but it will also tell you if the battery is dead and how far along the charging is.

hmm, so I would have to go with a manual one? Battery Tender Jr, maybe?

You need a manual trickle charger. Basically just a dumb charger that supplies a constant low amp charge...something like this

Lots of complaints from people trying to use the 'automatic' type chargers. Either they have to trick the charger into thinking there is a battery installed or they never get it to work and continue to work. It shuts itself off because it doesnt detect a load from the battery
