Actually after a bit of thinking, I recalled seeing some stuff at the Dollarstore last time I was there and was impressed by it but never gave it too much attention. I went back yesterday to take a look again and better examine what I had seen previously.

Well the stuff is nice, cut easy and has a non slip feel to it. At $3.50/cdn for a roll of 18x48”, just over 1/16” of think. 2ceac551812cc6e38e32aab4744dcf44.jpgI basically got away with $32 worth that I believe will also cover the two top chests come time. I used 5 rolls to line the 12 drawers of the large cabinet.

It was minimal waste as my drawers are 16.25”x23” so it worked out pretty well come cutting! So for any future Canadians, may be worth checking out this stuff!

Started taking apart the two smaller cabinets. Pulled all sliders and drawers out. These were all in great condition. Pulled the little strips from the front which will get cleaned and polished.

What’s everyone’s thoughts whether to go flat black or gloss for the drawers? They were originally black and I think I want to keep this contrast vs. going red. Keeping them black will look better and keep it to the authentic look. Any recommendations?

The bottom piece of the fold out had a dent that I managed to straighten out with a bit of heat.

While taking apart the boxes I stumbled on this magnet in one. After a bit of cleaning thing turned out nice, going on my other box. I’m sure wherever Jim is this box is far from Ontario where it originated from.

Next task is to start sanding down the drawer faces as well as the two boxes to strip the paint off as much as I can. And then a degrease.

Cool
If you want to stick with the black on the drawers, would do semi gloss on them. if you can't locate semi gloss, take equal parts of flat & gloss & mix them together

Unfortunately didn’t see your post just till now.. I ended up with Gloss.

Here is some more progress, drawers were sanded and cleaned off, primed and then painted. The weather hasn’t been great so had to setup inside again.

They turned out good. Next on the task is to strip the larger of the two and remove the old paint. This one will be interesting to paint due to the folding door etc.

Plan will be to get both cabinets ready for paint and do it one guy to prevent having to setup & clean the gun numerous times.

Isn’t that what a Kitchen is for?

So the front panel door that closes the large cabinet, I decided to try a bit of patch work on the area that was bent/damaged. I used the stuff like Spackling (I had on hand) meant for metal. Well 4th coat of primer over the area and the stuff is coming through like no other. Thoughts? I’m thinking it will do the same with the red?

Try sanding it back down and whel you spread your bondo, spread it fully top to bottom. When dry, use a long file board with about 80 grit, going the full stroke top to bottom. That will let it blend in fully and flat. Looks like you're ending up with "bulls eyes" or low spots.
Then Prime and use Nitro Stan or there's another brand that's good but I can't think of the name of the right now but it's like a thick primer but you spread it and then you can send it with about 100 and that maybe a little more primer and some more Nitro Stan and if necessary. It's at delays it can be applied over primer. And then blend it in what's progressively finer you have to get it a little everything a little higher and then use a long sanding board or a long sanding block and sand the entire length or width whatever way you're working so you don't get low spots if that makes sense.

We’re getting there. Gotta get those wheels cleaned off from the over spray.

The two other cabinets are primed. Just need to find a day with extra hours and decent temp to spray them.

Well for the home stretch. This time around I used mineral spirits as the thinning agent and I must say, WOW what a difference! The smell is almost non existent.

I still don’t have that good of a hold, figure out on the gun setup. At first it was coming out and almost giving like a sandpaper finish (rough). It almost appeared to be very thin and dry instantly. If anyone has tips, I’m all ears!

After messing around with it I think I got it, had to layer on a fair bit. Used approx. 7oz of paint for the two cabinets shown, is that excessive to get this kind of finish?

The compressor too ran heavy. Regulator at gun was set to about just over 40psi which with the trigger pulled basically gives me 20psi or so. It’s a 20gallon unit, 7.4cfm @ 40, 5.7 @ 90.

In post #59 it looks like they need another coat of paint to give it a smooth finished look.

More like these samples shown. These are rattle can finishes.

All said and done. Installed the black drawer liner in these ones as well. Couple of side by side shots of before vs. after.

Not sure how these threads work. First post. Wanted to say that it looks fantastic! Also fellowCanadian. Couldn’t find what colour red you used for the craftsman. I have one to attempt to refinish as well. Yours looks spot on. That set up in Toronto and greater area will cost well over $500.

Thanks! The large cabinet was painted using spray bombs.. Apple Gloss Red by Rustoleum. Then I realized due to the sheer volume of painting required using spray bombs wasn’t cost effective so I switched to spraying with a gun.

The Craftsman box was done using Home Hardwares Beauty Tune Rust Paint - Fire Red Gloss which came out to a pretty close match between the two cabinets.

If you use a white primer instead of dark, you will need a lot less red paint. I buy Rustoleum on line. It comes to less than $3/can that way and I can get any color I want. Being an Amazon Prime member means next day free delivery but it may be a whole different story in Canada.
