sears should stop advertising these lifetime warranty on hand tools or change it.
did this happen because the policy gets abused?

Luv sears been going there for 30+ years never had a problem walking with a broken craftsman tool and walking out with same or better. Just swaped a 22 OZ framing hammer with a cracked fiber glass handle that was about 20 years old and beat to sh#t they gave me latest and greatest in minutes maybe my Sears is just a good one or they know how much I buy ?

I had returned an old ratchet that I broke the other day.... the clerk looked at it and said ok will give u a new one, b/c we don't have any refurbs....I said ok... he then goes "Ok I 'll go get u that breaker bar." I corrected him, and said no it's a ratchet.. I almost exploded at him for being such a clown bag!!!!

So to summarize:
  • You brought your old, broken ratchet back to Sears.
  • They gave you a new one.
  • You where enraged because the minimum wage employee didn't call your tool by the correct name?

This story has more than one tool in it...

Its really not a sears issue, its a retailer issue. You can get the same **** service at any number of stores. I'm not sure why people keep going back to the same store if they have such issues.

People at jobs are at different levels of abilities. We traded the cost of knowledgeable folks for the discount of the box stores. It can be rewarding to help out the cashers or other employees. An EBay seller agreed to give me combined shipping but after winning both items he didn’t know how to accomplish that and was thankful after emailing him the procedure. Sears is no different. I like life to be as smooth as possible and find the easiest way to get what I need done.

Here are some thoughts on this topic. For better or worse I'm guess I'm an expert on the "retail game" considering I've spent almost 10 years working for RONA, Cdn Tire, PartSource and now an independent Auto Value affiliated parts store.

A small percentage of employees (I'd say 1 in 5) are on a power trip when dealing with returns. They heckle you on purpose, if you go to a different store or deal with another employee you likely won't have the problem.

Virtually all retail pays minimum wage, parts stores maybe 2 or 3 $ more/hr if you are lucky so it's very hard to find good employees, although the high unemployment rate has made more qualified ppl available as of late.

Many employees have little knowledge of their department because they are better suited to other departments. I'm a car guy and when I had to work in seasonal and sporting goods I hated it and knew frigg all. That's usually a result of store management's decisions or sometimes it happens when someone calls in sick.

Most stores are understaffed, which contributes to scatterbrain and irritablity.

Too many customers are rude and blame staff for problems that are sometimes even out of the managers hands. Like one time a customer bitched about how we made up our flyer and the pricing in it. Even the franchise owner had no input on making the flyer, let alone me.

Staff are always underpressure, especially in these economic times. If you mess up there are 20 or 30+ ppl that would love to replace you, sometimes for even less $.

A common misconception (one that even I had) is that most retail employees are "simple" or low iq. In all my years working in retail I can honestly say only one was a total airhead, the rest were at least average intelligence, some were very smart.

Usually smaller, non-corporate stores have a more knowledgeable staff, but not always.

Where you spend your $ makes a statement, if the service is lousy at a store, prices are too high, you don't like what they carry etc, talk with your wallet and go somewhere else.

Retail, especially considering the low wage is one of the toughest jobs out there. If my meanest/ rudest customers did my job for a week they'd likely be much more polite and understanding customers.

Having said all this, while retail is a tough game, only a small % of employees and customers are ******** assholes, most are good people, although everyone has their moments.
