Sears funny

I was at our Sears store the other day hoping to find a clearance deal (sorry none). I was near the Ratchets when I overheard a new employee ask what those "torque" wrenches were for. The employee told him they were to tighten fasteners to "OSHA" specifications. I thought about jumping in, but where would I start and where would I end? I knew it was a lost cause so I just snickered to myself and went about my business.

I was employed by Home Depot in the lumber and building materials section in college. Had absolutely no clue about anything in there, or the entire store. But I did get to drive a fork lift, which was fun. That's what you get when the people there make $7-$9/hr. Guys who know what a torque wrench is are working in the field not working retail.

The last tool department employees I saw at Sears could not identify any of the items I brought in for warranty replacement. The exotic specialty tools I was exchanging? A 1/4" drive extension, a 10" adjustable wrench, and a flat-bladed screwdriver. They started to look through the box of rebuilt ratchets, and I think were relieved when I offered to go pick out the replacements myself...

I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say torque wrenches are for breaking stubborn bolts/nuts loose.

when you are puuting together an engine and you get it to tight you can snap off bolts or bend oil pans so they leak. you can get away with out one for many things but there are many things you need it on. i thought a serpenteen belt tool was a waste of $ till i took the alternator out of my wifes car and its such a tight space i couldnt get anything else in there. point is theres a rason a tool is made.

I used to "torque" n&b too, but only by feel. You just keep tightening until it starts

to get easier to turn. That is how you know it's at peak torque, and you can stop.

Those torque wrenches are extremely dangerous. My brother and I used one to measure how many foot lbs. of tourque our four wheeler put out at the rear wheels, 200 foot lbs. before it threw him across the garage!

Yep - OSHA / EPA / WORKERS COMP / UNEMPLOYMENT / SKY HIGH INSURANCE PREMIUMS / UNIONS / LABOR BOARDS / DISCRIMINATION,HARASSMENT CLAIMS / HIGH INVENTORY TAXES / ALL KINDS OF LOCAL AND STATE INSPECTIONS, FROM FIRE SPRINKLER/EXTINGUISHER. TO WATER SUPPLY BACK FLOWS, TO YOU NAME IT. The list of **** goes on, and on, forever. Move your manufacturing to China. Mexico, India, and get rid of all that, drops straight to the bottom line. This stuff has a lot more to do with why we are losing jobs to other countries than just their lower wages.

Yes it is a can of worms. The ones near me (in two different stores) have decided to tell people if it's part of a set they don't carry anymore, or doesn't look like current stock, they won't replace it under warranty. They also make me wait at the register while they wait on hold every time I use my sears card and a coupon so that someone in a call center can verify their employee number and so forth.
