Ever see one like this, with the gas engine on it?

How does that work?

How does the engine stop when pressure is built up?

It doesn't, looks like it works off an unloader valve. Engine runs but MIGHT idle down.

That's a Frankenstein. My parents have one like it only electric. I have a Speedaire that is just like it only electric.

I never thought about how one of those works. Bcz, never even crossed my mind until you asked.

I used to SELL THOSE THINGS WHEN THEY WERE NEW !

IIRC (over 40 years ago), they just blew off the pressure relief valve. You can see the head pressure unloader for starting.

My Honda powered Emglo uses unloader valves in the compressor heads to bleed off compression (actually they prevent it from happening) when max pressure is achieved and the engine returns to idle. When the pressure in the tank gets down to the minimum the engine speeds up, the unloader valves shut and compression starts again.

When the unloader valves are open the pump acts like a gas engine with the spark plug removed, no compression.

Some also have no real unloader in the compressor head , my old Wayne just keeps pumping air but instead of going into the tank it is open to atmosphere. Great buy on that if it runs and makes air.

Nice machine, why don't you modify it so when it is at the rated set pressure, it idles down to save gas and wear and tear.

I thought about frankensteining one by using a centrifugal clutch and the throttle connected to a pressure valve. Then a factory made unit (Ridgid/Honda) in need of work basically fell into my lap.

I found one of these in the garbage about 20 years ago. I replaced the carb gasket and got it running. Nice compressor.

I bought that same compressor back in 1976. I did add an addition lever valve to trigger the unloader for easier starting when the tank was half filled. The motor ran at a constant speed. It lasted until 2006, when the bottom of the tank rusted through.
I cut the mount off the tank and still have the engine and compressor head.
