Just curious if they're the same OEM? The SO says the COO is France. Can't find it for Sears.

I wouldn't doubt they are the same however. In another thread, I tried to point out those things rebranded by SO/Blue-Point that were a reasonable value or tolerable mark-up. If these are the same item, this isn't one of them.

I'd love to see SO cut out the middle-man and distribute direct to the trucks. I'm sure they do it the way they do, with the current model for a very good reason, but some of the mark ups are, as many here have pointed out again and again, ridiculous. :shocking:

I have the craftsman ones in my collection. They helped me when all other options failed. Definitely worth the money. I don't feel like the snap on ones are worth $100 though. But I don't use the c/m on a daily basis.

Billymade has researched the patent number on the ones from Sears and he says the COO is France. I'll try to find his post later on.

maybe thats why my snap on driver has the Astro ones on the truck. Closer to the sears prices, and they have the ratcheting lock mechanism.

Snap-on used to have the re-labeled Mayhews that were branded Blue-Points, but they're not on their site anymore. :dunno:

The patent has to due with hook and holing design on those. I have the matco version that also says made in france but the design is slightly different. But they match the patent picture in the tools of the old world thread. Its a fair design, but a think a ratcheting lock would work better. You need to squeeze those pretty hard for the catch to engage.

How much force is on your hand before you reach the catch?

I have the Craftsman and depending on the clamp you may have to use quite a bit of force.

Also, Clamps will be loose enough to move at times but you still don't have the pliers locked so you have to crank on them even more until they are locked. This is where the ratcheting would be a big help.

Other then not having the ratcheting lock the Craftsman's did the job well and I've used them many times and on places where there was barely enough room to even get them into.

I have the craftsman version and I use it a lot.

It is made in France, says so on the tool. Lifetime warranty (I grilled the guy for a good minute before I bought em. Would've bought them anyway). I've used the Astro, SK and some other brand with a really wonky clamp holding system. The SKs were the only ones that came close, but I eventually destroyed the cable, no warranty. The cable should last forever as long as you do not mis-use the tool (catch the clamp behind the actual clamp catch).

IMHO, the single catch is way easier to use than the ratcheting design (I do have some non-cable pliers with the ratchet). In terms of installation, you can position the clamp and then with slight palm pressure and a flick of the thumb-- POP! its installed

I do usually have to use two hands to begin to compress a clamp. My hands are pretty small, I'm 5'09" 165lbs. But I'm also a 5th season commercial salmon set-net fisherman (man-hands)

Hope that helps:beer:

I wish the handles on the Craftsman were like the Snap-On's; that is one of the main weakness (I would also like a teeth, instead of just a one size lever for adjustment).... they slide off and are not made that well or particularly comfortable! I believe that Craftsman maybe getting these through Mayhew...

I use these like crazy at work; they are the best deal going I can find.
