You're right. If you adjust for inflation those 60s and 70s tools were likely more expensive than the Craftsman tools of today.

Plus Sears also ran a payment plan back in those days also because their tools were relatively expensive for the average Joe.

It's funny how many people have Sears horror stories about shipping. My experiences are the complete opposite. They tend to overpack to the point it's actually obnoxious. I bought a 1/4" socket set and a wrench it came in a 3 foot long box packed to the top with peanuts and each one individually packaged inside. I couldn't figure out how they didn't lose money every time they shipped to my house.

I speculate pack or lack of packing with Sears can depend on location shipped from.

I have had stuff shipped from IL with no packing and received with holes in the box and lost product. Also have received stuff shipped from PA that I almost thought of going into the used Styrofoam packing peanut business because they used so much.

I assume the same, I just think its funny that they don't have at least some sort of consistent policy for their warehouses. So many people with bad experiences, then mine that are overpacked, doesn't make good sense for them.

Not excusing it, but packaging and product shipping is unskilled work and does readily attract the brightest crayons in the box to do it. If it was anything like my teenage daughter had as a part time packer/shipper for a book retailer, they are probably paid a minimum wage with a base hourly quota rate and only make more if they exceed their quota rate. That usually gets people who will cut steps in that line of work.

I got a set of their industrial wrenches a few weeks ago that was packed good. They used those air pillow things and it was all tight in the box. A few years ago, I ordered a 1/2 inch RHFT ratchet and it came in a box the size of a case of oil comes in with zero packing. At first I wondered if someone was sending me a bomb as it also had no return address label on it.

Wait a second. Wasn't the packing the part that was done in the US? The quality was better when they shipped from China.

A new truck is completely different than a cheap tool like a $5 craftsman wrench.
All of the ridiculous comparisons it just that, Ridiculous

Maybe you guys that buy these tools should phone ahead to the forge that makes the wrenches so that they don't end up getting thrown around and in to sorting and storage bins.
And get scratched or marked..
Maybe they can use a Silk Pillow to catch your wrenches..

Just so you know, these wrenches were far more than 5.00 each. Since they were not a set I paid the higher price per unit. Average cost was around 20.00 per wrench.

And to top it off you cant even sign in to the sears.com website tonight because they are doing updates... Why they would do updates this early in the evening is beyond me. I have all my clients do updates on their servers and sites in the early morning hours to prevent problems with customer use interruptions. Guess Sears didn't think of that, or they don't care how much online business they lose...
