WOW , looks like you have some very nice ratchets. What is the tooth count on the 3/8" flex head (2nd from top)?

Re: Sears THFT

Great collection of RHFT's - I have a 1/2 and 3/8 - the 3/8's is one of my favorites to use to this day. If I ever come across a 3/8 flex head I will grab it.

All the RHFT ratchets including the flex models use the same 41 tooth dual offset pawl mech. for the respective drive sizes. Since the pawls are offset, the ratchets have 82 clicks per rotation.

Nice collection!

Got a question, though. Are you a nut for ugly trucks, or an ugly guy who likes trucks?

I lucked out on the majority of the 3/8" standard ratchets. I had 3 and found one on ebay for $7.99 plus shipping, buy it now price. I reloaded the page after I bought it and found out that there were 10 for sale at that price, but one was already bought, so I turned around and bought the remaining 8 ratchets and got it all shipped for $5.00.

I love vintage trucks. I see the potential in rough looking trucks. I would point it out to my nephew and he would say "That ugly thing", so I made up the name.

Here is one of my trucks as an example:

Nice collection you have there. Your truck is cool too. I have a soft spot for old workhorses. I only have one 1/4" RHFT that I picked up at a swap meet a few years ago for $4. I didn't know how special they were till I came to GJ. Now I want more. Buttery smooth goodness.

Terrific collection !!!

Gotta tell us the story of efforts and years it took to assemble that fine assortment of ratchets.

First time I've seen large ratchets with . . .
. . . . . "WARNING - WEAR EYE PROTECTION" . . . .
. . . . .
do other manufacturers have such a warning on their ratchets??

My obsession with the RHFT started when I found my grandfathers 3/8 ratchet in '78. I didn't start officially collecting them until I ordered the 1/2 drive 57 piece set that had the fine tooth ratchet and the standard flex head. I got the tools so I could work on my new to me Jeep I bought in Oregon while I was in the Coast Guard. Another Ugly Truck:

Wish I still had it.

cool. I have the 3/8 43781. what are they worth?

No, there's no such thing as an Ugly Jeep - there are Ugly Chevys for certain, but not Jeeps. Then again, the FC series was, uh, "unique", but more Pugly than Ugly...

how do you ID a RHFT ratchet?

UTN's pics are worth a thousand words, but I'll add a few more. The RHFT ratchets were originally patented and produced by Moore Drop Forge (later EASCO, and finally Danaher) for Craftsman and several other brands. The shifter cap is fairly unique and doesn't really resemble any other round head ratchet (at least to the semi-experienced eye). There's also an integral knurled speeder ring on the drive side (not seen in UTN's pics). The "other" (and IMHO lesser quality) Craftsman round heads sourced from Stanley have the integral knurled speeder on the reverse cap side.

The design is a double pawl that has one pawl just disengaged when the other is seated, and so effectively "doubles" the number of clicks you get when ratcheting compared to the actual number of teeth found in the round head, and halves the minimum swing arc for a pawl to engage the next tooth (hence Round Head Fine Tooth). It was for a good while (and still is to more than a few of us), the Best Craftsman Ratchet Ever Produced.

Fortunately, a bazillion of them seem to have been sold over many years and they've proven to be pretty darn durable (the 1/4" ones maybe not quite as durable as the rest), so the standard length ones aren't "rare" by any stretch of the imagination. Now the flex-head ones shown above are a little different story rarity-wise, particularly the 1/2" one. You can find the standard length ones branded (with a variety of handle shapes/knurling designs) for NAPA, KD, Allen, Armstrong, Master Mechanic, and EASCO. A long handled fixed head 1/2" version was never offered by Craftsman but can be found (with varying difficulty) in most of the other brandings as well as Rigid (for use with their pipe threaders). There are other branded 3/8" flex ratchets around, but I've yet to see a 1/2" flex branded for anyone but Craftsman. Finally, there are non-quick release versions of some of the other brands, but AFAIK, the Craftsmans were always quick release.

There you go, far more info than you ever wanted to help identify the venerable RHFT....

There are/were other manufacturers that have round head fine tooth ratchets with double pawls out there (Bonney for example), but there's only one RHFT....

Here is my only other round head type Craftsman ratchet. It is not a fine tooth and it came in some set I bought from Sears. The thin head set shown is a chinese set I bought. Didn't realize it was from china, I just wanted a second set of them, luckily my other set is made in USA. The other round ratchet is a Sparta from Napa I bought around '78. Haven't been able to find out any additional information on that brand.

NAPA used to sell New Britain tools, which were very high quality. Sparta was a cheaper version of the New Britains. I have a New Britain and a Sparta ratchet. I don't remember the tooth count, but the Sparta has fewer teeth.

The Craftsman RHFTs are one of the best RHFTs made. I like the pushbutton release and the spinner is sometimes useful.

Just curious more then anything I picked up one or two of those ratchets over the years and they are just ok, OP what is it that you love about them?

With so many of the new designs out there to choose from I don't use the older Sears ratchets much anymore.

Nice collection:thumbup::beer:

Woody 73, I can't speak for teh OP but I love the feel of my RHFT's. I have been reducing the teardrop Craftsmans's out of my tools. I probably have about 12-15 RHFT including a Easco 1/4 standard handle and a Easco 3/8 flex handle.

Actually its 45/90 for the 1/2 and 3/8, not sure about 1/4"

And this was back in the early 70's LONG before anyone got into the 60 and 80 tooth rats or even 88...

What is the part number for the 1/2 long handle flex head? I want one so bad. I have the standard 1/2 and would like to build up the collection.

I bought a 1/2 in one from the flea market a few weeks ago for 5 bucks along with a 12 in extension. Though the design of the round head was cool didn't known it was anything special until now. How much is it worth btw?

As KEH stated, Sparta was NAPA's economy line and New Britain was the premier professional line, both produced by New Britain Machine Company. The only real differences between the two was that New Britain normally had a better finish, and I think there were some shape/handle design differences particularly in wrenches over time. That and the Sparta line was pretty basic in sizes and tools, while New Britain was much more expansive.

I have 44 and 60 tooth Sparta ratchets, as well as 44 and 60 tooth Husky models, which was New Britain Machine's economy line for large non-NAPA auto parts stores (Blackhawk was the premier line for them).

My 1/2" flex is a 44983 (patent pending). In typical Sears fashion though, there may be a couple different #'s, depending on the age/production run. They were listed up to a few years ago - I'm still kicking myself silly for not buying a couple more.

Could be that they just need a good cleaning and lube. I grabbed a not-so-smooth 3/8" EASCO at the flea market the other week that was dry and rusty/dusty on the inside. Soaked and cleaned it, then sprayed it down with NAPA Sil-Glyde, and man what a difference! I pulled apart a brand new Allen 1/2" this week and found it barely lubed with a light machine oil. It'll get a shot of Sil-Glyde once I get by NAPA for a fresh can. RHFT's don't like a thick grease/lube.

To be honest, I don't use mine as much anymore either, but it's because I don't want to risk mangling them on a rash act of stupidity. They have a lot of sentimental value, as they're the first set of ratchets I bought to replace the craptastic raised panel ones that came in my high school grad gift set.

My mom didn't have any real tools to speak of. When I was in my early teens, and had to work on the car, I used to buy cheap chinese tools from Western Auto. Those ratchets sucked. When I got my hands on that first 3/8" RHFT I was hooked.

The 1/2" flex is 44983. I spotted a 3/8" flex on ebay the other day. Didn't really look at the listing but I think it had a buy it now price of around $170.00.
