I shop at sears maybe one time per year. I recently was given $30 in freecash through their rewards program, but for absolutely no reason. I needed a set of ratcheting combination wrenches so i looked them up. Regular price on the 20 wrench (10 metric and 10 SAE) set was $119. It was online for $60. After applying my Freecash, the set was $30 plus tax. I used a sears gift card bought from a local Grocery chain store that offers fuel perks, and my total price was $29 after tax. The best part was that Sears gave me another $20.30 in freecash for my next purchase!!! No wonder they are all going out of business. I got $50 in freecash and spent under $30

Makes you wonder doesn't it. My neighbor returned a ratchet, they didn't have one, he says ok, I will stop back next week. No,,, they offer to mail it free so he doesn't need to go back to the store,,,, ha Did everything they could do to keep him out. Absolutely stupid.
**** got so cheap they almost pay you to carry it to the car.

I couldn’t get the Harbor freight versions (which are 7pcs each, not 10) for a combined price with coupons less than the craftsman ones I got.

I’ll use the $20 free that they gave me to buy another tool, And They’ll probably give me an additional $10 free. Everyone should sign up for this and enjoy Sears’ ride down to bankruptcy. The good thing about craftsman is already selling in ace hardware stores so there’s a good chance you’ll still be able to replace some of the tools if they don’t discontinue them all

I've been given $88 in freecash since signing up in late january. I nabbed the Gearwrench 20pc ratcheting set when it was $40 and used $30 in freecash. Was $11 and change after tax.

Last Christmas, my daughter gave me a $50.00 Flannel Shirt. I like it a lot. I went on line tonight and bought 3.

3 Shirts @ $24.00 ea. $72.00
1 $10.00 coupon -$10.00
SYW Points - $ .61
Free Shipping
Total Net out of Pocket $61.39

Plus I received $20.61 in SYW points and $1.86 cash back from my wife's shopping rewards app

Sorry about the formatting, the site didn't cooperate

I don't know how they can stay in business much longer at this rate

That is weird. The wife and I have had a Sears credit card for probably 30 years or more and we have not gotten any freecash rewards. We have not shopped at Sears for several years now, but I would think they would want to offer us some freecash to try and get us back as customers. Apparently I would be wrong.

Log in to their website, I'm sure you have offers sitting there. Everyone that makes an account will get freecash offers. Some better than others.

They are desperate, I played this game a lot in the last 2 1/2 years. I had to average under 50% of retail on everything I bought there, problem for me is I ran out of tools I want. You play the game right and they are under HF or HD on pricing and you can have complete sets of everything, great for home use. I tell people the real Sears going out of business sale is right now at the stores still operating. A bonus is, if any of the Chinese Craftsman stuff I got (I also got lots of USA stuff too) breaks, soon I'll be able to exchange it for SBD USA Craftsman stuff and I paid a fraction of the retail price for all the stuff I bought.

What they do make sense. Sears is trying to get people into their store and website. With the freecash offer, they are hoping you will buy something. Of course some people only buy stuffs using freecash so they got a great deals. Other people, which I suspect a lot more, they spent real money.

So overall, they probably make money.

And they get you to create a thread here - hey awesome, you realize that is free publicity for them :lol_hitti Now you are kinda working for them for free. Did you post that on twitter, facebook too? Spread the word to your family, neighbors, friends?

This been going on for a while. It is not something that Sears just start doing yesterday. There are discussion threads dedicated for this on the web, even here at GJ.

Sears is not the first company who give away points, freecash, whatever you want to call it to attract customers. And wont be the last company who will do so.

I thought with the current Sears business plan, the last thing they want to do is be profitable.

While I'll agree with your premise and it's certainly nothing new, usually there are SOME stipulations with the giveaway. I just bought a USA made 3 piece pliers set that was on sale and out of pocket I spent $2.05 after tax! That's not a good business plan by any stretch of the imagination. The last thing I bought was a few years ago, and unless there are more "free points", I probably won't again.

You also mentioned earlier that by pointing out the free cash on the web we drove traffic to Sears, and your right it did...just to give away $30 to another person who otherwise wouldn't have "shopped" there. Oh well...

Having seen this done a number of times in the past, when a corporation has enormous $$$$$ ******* in inventory, whether it's retail stock or parts and materials for manufacturing, there are three pheonmena:
  1. There is a "holding cost" to simply warehouse and keep track of what you have, how much, and where it's stored, including specific location inside a warehouse (i.e. exactly what "bin" it's in).
  2. Capital ******* in inventory is not liquid and it cannot be accounted for as such either.
  3. Liquidating excess inventory and any "accounting" losses doing so can be a writedown on the balance sheet, including the required ones sent to the SEC and whatever revenue is generated goes into the pile of revenue (i.e. income).
With the number of retail store closings and other corporate structural changes I'm not surprised by the "fire sale" of many items, not the least of which are Craftsman tools. You may think they're losing money doing this when the reality is they're at least stopping the hemorrhaging if not actually making some when all the accounting work is done, and I don't mean cooking the accounting books either (which sends people to jail when they do it in public companies).

the local sears by me is closing, stopped by the other day to see what was left and craftsman had been picked over. They were even selling the bare shelving units. There was a huge line of people buying heavily discounted clothes and like 2 poor souls working the registers. I guess they will be out of their misery soon enough. :shoot5:

Forgot to mention that it's much more expensive than most would imagine to pack up merchandise that's on the sales floor and ship it somewhere else without incurring damage than it is to sell it in place. Not incurring damage is nearly impossible as is organizing it by UPC and keeping it organized. Just moving stuff from one warehouse to another can be costly. Many companies will hire a liquidating company to come in and ring up the sales, plus dismantle fixtures and such if those are being sold off. Those "poor souls" may or may not be actual Sears employees. The folks who do liquidations generally don't make it obvious who they are.

I ordered some full polished wrenches with my points or rewards, came to 8 dollars for a 11(?) piece full polished long pattern metric set, and the wrenches look really good actually.

I used to work in the auto center 5+ years ago and haven't really shopped there since. I stopped in when my old store closed down just to find that the pricing what nothing to be excited about.

However after seeing this thread I had to go hop into my SYWR account to see what was sitting there.

Ended up having a $20 credit and opted for free shipping also redeemed my left over points. Got this kit for $10.74 shipped.

Then when I was done...they gave me another $20 to play with. So I plan on ordering a pull saw here soon too. I believe with the sale price, it should be basically free.

Kudos to the marketing department and the OP for getting me to spend money there again...albeit very little.

I haven't received any decent offers either. I did get a nice "use your credit card or we're dropping your limit" notice not too long ago. Oh okay....right away.
