I’m looking to replace the hand wheel that controls the blade angle on my dad’s old table saw that he got from sears years ago. The original is plastic and cracked where it mounts to the shaft. The mount appears to be a hex nut, but I’m not 100% sure. I’m not out there today and won’t be able to get a good look until next weekend. It was manufactured in the 90s if I remember correctly. Everything I’ve been able to pull up on eBay or google shows them with different mounting types. Would we be able to remove that nut and use an older metal hand wheel?

If you can make the shaft match the wheel, anything is possible, as long as the wheel OD is small enough. Most any OEM wheel will be plastic junk. Look for old vintage ones for quality.

I've seen square shafts shimmed up to match, round shafts w keys shimmed.

I have a similar saw made in the 1970's. Replaced the plastic wheels with aluminum ones from McMaster-Carr.

Don't ask.
Many years ago I replaced mine with metal wheels but I think the shafts were D shaped (I don't recall a hex nut). I think I found the wheels on E-bay.
Here is a video that may help you.
