Likely carbon steel and not hss. No reason to spend money on something like this since a good hss tap will cost you $4 from ENCO. Who needs all those taps? And if you do then you would no that this is not good money spent. No offense to anyone. Peace.

Plus it's chinese made. I swear people buy stuff only because it's on sale.

No lifetime warranty likely either.

Save your money, buy USA made Irwin if your looking for affordable taps sets.

HSS taps and dies cost a fortune, a lot more than $4. Not sure what brand you've seen on Enco but if its $4 I very much doubt its HSS or its from Asia as well under the guise of HSS. Good cobalt steel will last an extremely long time unless you're constantly cutting fresh threads into hardened metals. I don't know about most but the vast majority of what im doing is cleaning or cutting threads in mild steel or cast aluminum. Nothing fancy.

Some other thoughts,

Irwin taps and dies (which are cobalt) also have no warranty. Use lubricant and proper motion and they'll last you a very long time.

Hertel and OSG taps can be had for about $4 when on sale and you get 20 to 30 % off. Check use-enco.com.

For this that want to clean up threads, get the Kastar set that is rebranded as cm. that is a good set for reworking threads. Taps and dies are for cutting threads and in my opinion carbon is not the way to go.

Hope this helps. All of my opinions were meant to be helpful and respectful. Hope they are found that way.

This was a common debate when the GW stuff went on sale.

I bought it anyway, assuming the 2-3 sizes I would use frequently I would replace with better quality taps. I haven't had the need to. They work GREAT in mild steel. I do properly lubricate though.

I'm sure I'll eventually need to replace one or two, but the convenience of having all sizes I could need available is very worth it.

The right answer is individuals instead of sets. If you don't already have a full set of taps & dies most likely you only need 2-3 ever anyway.

The right answer could also be the HF titanium coated if you're going to buy chinese taps & die sets, instead of this one.

This set at this price is not the right answer.

Now find me a 6mm x 1.00 die in HSS, new at a store, for less than $10. How about less than 20, or $30? Like I said it will cost a small fortune. You'll spend more money getting taps and dies in 3-4 sizes of HSS than you will buying a 50pc Irwin set. To add to this I would never want to be without my sets. Sometimes you need to oversize. Better to have it and not need it.

HF set is garbage. The die stock is garbage, the tap wrench is garbage, the taps and dies dull very quickly. Some aren't even cut cleanly out of the box so they bind and you risk breaking them off even while using them correctly. You get what you pay for with taps and dies. Irwin and Gearwrench sets are far better quality.

I'm interested in getting a cobalt tap and die set but I can't locate a set made by Irwin. I see the cobalt drill bits they make but only steel T&D sets. Where can I find the sets you mention?

No lifetime warranty

whoopdie. for the money its worth the shot for my occasional need.

For the occasional user, who then snaps his tap and is left wondering about a warranty or replacement this might matter.

Theres low quality tap and die sets everywhere, just ask yourself if you want to overpay for them. HF does them same quality for half the price. Irwin eclipses the quality for about double.

See how I agree with you there?

If you are going to buy a set and it is not from a quality brand, it is my opinion that the HF Titanium are a choice that gives more value than a sears or GW set, unless the GW set is on sale.

The logic is simple. I have gotten good taps & dies (read, not great, not spectacular, but good) from HF and questionable ones from Sears. I personally haven't seen many GW on sale before I got my stash of NOS USA taps & dies. Now I'm not buying sets at all but I still have that HF set and there are some sizes in it I use.

I don't use them often as I'm not a machinist but no real machinist is considering any chinese sets anyway.

jesus, what a bunch of douche bags in this thread. if you want to go spend ***$ on taps to use a few times a year go ahead. for the guys that want to have a set to fix some buggered threads now and then these are fine. im a machinist and know tool cutting, the so called experts in here are a joke, do you think the average guy in his garage is tapping m42 or d2? get a clue.
