Seating a pinion seal

Often pinion seals on differentials are hard to get started in straight.

On my front Dana 44, a piece of 3" schedule 40 DOM tube works well, if you happen to have some handly.

A friend of mine recommended that I go to Home Depot and loop for a PVC drain that has just the right diameter. Found the one he was talking about for $2.25. Once I punched out space on the top for the pinion shaft, it worked perfectly.

I'd imagine that regardless of the size of the seal, you could find some piece or other of tubing or pipe that would fit.

That is the kind of thing I use my 3/4" drive sockets for, or as you said a surplus piece of pipe.
