Hi all

going today or tomorrow to look at an Electric Orange Snapon KRL722APJK box that a local guy is selling. He says that it's still in the shipping crate and he needs to get rid of it. Didn't go into details but i'm guessing he's got some cashflow problems. On SO's website it lists for $5655 and this guy's asking $3500 OBO for this one. I figure I can knock the price down a couple hundred but that's about it. Is this a decent price? I figure it's pretty good seeing as I'm saving $2000+ off the price of a new box plus I don't have to pay taxes on it.

I also asked him about the SO warranty and he said he'd talk to his truck guy and see if he'd cover the box for me seeing as it is unused (maybe rewrite the receipt?). Anyone had any experience with transferring SO's warranty?

Also, the stock number on SO's site for this box is KRL722BPJK but the top of the page, as well as the seller refer to it as KRL722APJK. does the B and A in the numbers indicate there are 2 different KRL722 boxes?

any insight would be greatly appreciated

thanks!!

I just bought a second hand snap on krl 1022 with stainless top and cover for $2,000 (basically unused), so in my opinion that price might be a little high, but take into account how often these toolboxes show up for sale around you.

If it's the exact configuration and color you want then buy it. If you have to make compromises then you might want to keep looking.

Even though used boxes can be very good value it can be a very long wait if you're fussy about model no., color, proximity to where you live, condition and price.

Take it out of the crate and look it over before you make a firm decision. I've ordered enough new toolboxes to know that there is a good chance of damage during shipping.

SO was selling new 722s for $2995 for awhile... thats the price I paid for mine and could have been what he paid for his. You might offer $3k on it.

I guess this shows how little I know about SO pricing!!! I thought the price online was pretty much what the truck reps charged. That's the reason I've never bothered to call a truck guy as $5655 is WAAAY above what i can pay for a toolbox. Hell, $3500 is even a stretch! As I'm not one that travels in the "snapon circles", I wouldn't know that $3500 is likely what he paid for it. I will still go see it and give it a thorough look-over. The box is the exact color I'm after and orange boxes don't seem to be very popular around here so they never come up for sale second-hand. I do want a KRL but it is, however a little larger than I was looking for (I have a large Mastercraft cabinet as well) so this one would have been for my "nicer" tools to keep in the attached garage. So maybe a call to a snapon truck rep is in order after all.

Thanks everyone for the eye-opening information!!

you can get better deals from dealers sometimes. I bet he still owes money to the dealer. ask for a ZERO balance receipt from the dealer if you will buy it.
ask questions. if he balks at it then walk away. or just bring 2400 and show him the 100's all in a row and he might change his mind.

Yes, call a local SO dealer and see what they say. Boxes are an exception to the "price is the price" policy.

I'm not served by a SO dealer but found that they can discount boxes substantially and be much more aggressive with boxes vs. tools.

P.S. There's no such thing as "being a little larger" then you need.

Bring cash and offer him $2500.

If he said no, wait a week or two and call him to see if he changed his mind. If he still says no, walk. If its sold, find another one. You have the upper-hand as a buyer with cash and a seller that's desperate to sell.

This.

I was looking at a KRL722 in blue this past summer. It included the stainless steel top and the guy was asking $2400. I sat on my thumb for a couple weeks and he sold it to someone else for $2300.

I'm not sure if he got any options with it (stainless top, etc) but I'm sure I can get all that after the fact. I do like the idea of showing up with cash to see if he bites at 2400. I'll even offer to go up to 2500 to sweeten the deal but knowing what I know now, that's the most I'll offer. It's been advertized locally for well over a month so i'm sure he'll be eager to sell. If all else fails I'll track down the local dealer and get one from him.

thanks again everyone for your input....you've saved me a lot of $$$$!!!

well, i wouldn't call that being cheap, maybe thrifty? :headscrat The more i think about it the more i'm thinking I can get a better deal. I've got a lot going for me - he's had it advertized for over a month, his ad says "need to get rid of it ASAP" and I have cash in hand....hopefully I'll have pics of a new box to post after this weekend!!

well, I brought the box home today. Almost dropped it off the back of the truck when unloading but thankfully my neighbor was there to give me a hand. I ended up paying a little more than I would have liked but when he said "still in crate", he wasn't kidding. He hadn't even opened it....shipping straps weren't cut and box was sealed. He opened it up for me when I came to see it and I looked it over. There wasn't a mark on it so we agreed on $3000 which is what he payed for it before taxes. So, I think I did OK. I actually caught up with the truck guy here the day before and asked what he'd sell a KRL722 box to me for and the best he'd do was maybe 10% below retail (just under $5000 - they're not willing to discount a lot of they don't know you. This guy's a diesel mechanic and deals with this rep all the time so that's why he got it for $3000+tax. He didn't seem to be desperate to sell it. He paid cash for it and said he decided after he took delivery of it that he didn't really need it so he decided to recoup most of his money and keep his current setup. Lucky for me as that's the first electric orange snap on box of any size I've seen for sale in my area in a looong time.

Anyways, it's in the garage now with all the mats in the drawers waiting for me to transfer my tools from the old one tomorrow. I'll take a couple pics if I can find my camera!

next to the Mastercraft (similar to Craftsman) box it's replacing...I'm actually re-using the box but it's being demoted to the detached garage-I must add that no stickers will be applied to the new box-just not my thing anymore. I'll just keep covering the old box!

and this is my 4 month old, Jack. His eyes lit up when he saw the bright orange toolbox-though he was yawning when my wife took the picture..lol. He'll likely inherit the box in a dozen or so years.

I figured I'd start him off right!! hoping he'll get interested in "garage-type" stuff....always felt it was important to teach little ones the importance of building/fixing stuff with their own 2 hands. That's what my dad did for me so I'm hoping to pass my experience and eventually my tools on to him.

Snap on runs specials on tool boxes every month but i think the specials are only goood if you go through snap on credit. For example lets say they have a box that cost 6k they'll give you 2-3k for your current box no matter what it is. I my case they gave 2k for a ****** walmart 5 drawer box but its 2k towards the new box your getting not 2k cash in your hands.

I had no idea that was even an option. I've never dealt with the truck rep where I live now and i just find that in order to get this kind of information, it's on me to ask the right questions as he really doesn't seem to be forthcoming on any information (ie trade credit)that would persuade me to buy a box from him. It's typical of people who live where I am now. If they don't know you or if you're not from the area, they really don't seem to want to help you. Apparently there's another guy that has a truck in the area. If I can track him down and if he's better to deal with than the first guy I tried, i'll buy the tools to fill my new box from him.

I almost got that same box from my snap on guy in blue last month. He quoted me 4100 for it with a stainless top and would throw in a blue point roll cart. This was on snap on credit of course. I almost took the bait but just couldnt do it. Congrats on the box, i dig the color.

thanks....i'm a bit of a fan of the color orange! I didn't know there was a stainless top available for this box. all I could find on the website was the black steel top coated in bed protector type material. I must check with the truck guy when I track him down. I'm hoping to get that and the matching service cart as well. If all it takes to get good deals is to open a credit account, no problem. I'll just pay it off before the interest goes on it!!

if you have a snap on dealer in your area, ask what he'll give you for your current toolbox and say you want to buy a krl722 box. there are usually good rebates, sometimes better then others so pay attention to what he is offering.

from what i see, if the toolbox is still in the box on the pallet for $3500, thats a pretty good deal. i couldn't get that from my dealer even after i trade in

as I posted above (see pics), I picked the box up last week. as it turns out, I got a pretty good deal and am very happy with the purchase. Now I just have to track down my local truck guy and get a SS top and a service cart to match it!
would SO offer a trade-in option on service carts or Stainless tops?

Most dealers I have talked to will take practically anything in trade to make a dealer happen! Especially, with the economy with the way it is; if they have a customer, I would think they wouldn't want them to walk away!
