This is pretty cool, I was thinking about something like this for an opium coffee table, but couldn't work out how to make the edge of the compartment flush with the side... I guess this is as good a solution as any!

Both of our bedroom nightstands have a secret compartment in the top that slides out to a full drawer that is 1.5" tall. Nice for putting some stuff in, but honestly, the expensive/valuable stuff gets put in the safe that's welded and bolted down in the basement.

I have been planning to build what looks like a normal plywood top work bench. I want the plywood top to have hidden hinges and open to reveal a 5 inch deep cavitity that I can store all of my sockets and ratchets in. Unless you knew it was there it should look like a plain old bench.

It wouldn't fool anyone, a clean workbench is a sure sign of something out of the ordinary. Who would want to clean off the work bench to get to the tools?

When I first got out of highschool I worked for a high end cabinet and furniture shop. We did lots of cool stuff like that, from hidden compartments in a giant gothic style bed, to wall units that shared a common wall, in one room it would be an entertainment center, in the other room it would be a china cabinet, that was hinged and would open up to the back of the entertainment, to allow access all the wires for the electronics. Fun job, an some awesome woodworking tools, but the pay was horrible!

Red Baron, is this shop still around, and do they have a website? Not looking to buy, but certainly interested in what they do...

Its been years since I have been over in that area, But if they are still around its McAvoy Studio in Escondido California. They did everything in house, and I mean everything. When I left they were tooling up to dry thier own lumber, just purchase the whole tree and start from there. They had a surface planer that was so old, that they had to convert it to electric, was originaly powered by a water wheel!! We had a lady that did stain glass, one guy all he did was furniture, like 8 guys that floated around whereever was needed deliveries, stairs (there was one room where we built whole staircases and delivered in one piece), sanding, milling assembly. Fun job!

My sister had a bunch of furniture made by a place in north county and every piece had hidden compartments. She didn't ask for them and said that the maker always included them. I wonder if it was the same place?

"Some student" is Yi-Ting Cheng and "Some School" is the Royal College of Art in London.

And there are are books dedicated to the subject of hidden compartments:
(all found on Amazon)
The Big Book Of Secret Hiding Places
by Jack Luger (Paperback)
Secret Rooms Secret Compartments
by Jerry Dzindzeleta (Plastic Comb)
Handmade Secret Hiding Places
by Nonny Hogrogian (Paperback)
Construction of Secret Hiding Places
by Charles Robinson (Paperback)
How To Hide Anything
by Michael Connor (Paperback)
etc

I originally found one of these type of books in a library years ago and it was a great read. Most internet searches turn up little in the actual area of construction of secret places.
