Securing a rented garage

So I just moved into a place in a nice neighborhood and was working on my first garage project (I have been without a garage for at least 5 years) I happily toiled away on my desk with the garage door open and one of my new neighbors popped their head to inform me that I shouldn't leave my garage door open, as the thefts have been high on this street. That would explain the "winners" casing the houses the other night...


So, how in the hell do I go about securing a garage that I rent???

If it has a garage door on rails, put something through the rails to prevent the door from lifting. Or get rid of the people who want to steal from you.

If you live in a free state, start sleeping in the garage with a Rottie and a 12 gauge pump. The dog will wake you up and slow them down just long enough for you to rid this planet of some pond scum.

First thing, do as the neighbor suggested and keep the garage door closed. Lock the garage when you're not there, cover any windows so people can't see inside. 90% of the battle is not raising any attention. Thieves are opportunists, they'll usually go for the easy score.

Yep agreed, keep a low profile. Put in an A/C unit and fans so even when its warm and humid you can keep everything closed up and comfortable. As well as bug free. Thats a real bonus. Nothing worse than getting devoured by mosquitoes when your hands are full of grease. Cover the windows with something to obscure the viewing from outside, but still let light in. Also look into a simple motion detector alarm. If there is an opener try to zip tie the emergency release lever so it can't be accessed with a coat hanger from outside. Or another way to block the coat hanger access. Or switch the opener to a liftmaster 3800 shaft style opener. Use motion lights outside.

I live in Hawaii, it's pretty much always 80 degrees on this part of the island, it doesn't rain...ever. there are no windows in the garage. we have the highest electricity cost in the country per watt hour. I can't have a dog here, it's an EXTREMELY liberal state and I married a Canadian so i can't even keep my gun in the house....As far as a security system, those have to be installed and my landlord could give a damn about security, but drilling holes in the walls..THAT she cares about.

Can you not get a wireless alarm? We have them over here in the UK and theres very little to do in the way of installation, alarm box outside with siren and light, wireless passive infrared detectors inside and a control panel. I can't see that adding an alarm even the wired kind would annoy any landlord, hell its making their property more desirable when you move out as is adding any security like window grilles etc. You can always add an anti smash film to any glass windows, most window tinting places should be able to supply this and it comes in clear versions. Adding an outside floodlight on a motion detector also deters thieves as they like dark places.

I have the existing alarm system in my home setup to dial my cell ph if someone
breaks in, cell is near me all times.
I have motion sensors around the exterior of the house /garage.
sadly, you cannot be to careful, especially now that unemployment is high, and times are rough.
look at your doors and windows, could you easily break in?
also get some alarm monitoring signs ( ebay) and post them in obvious places.

Get insurance for sure. I rented a garage without insurance once. It got cleaned out one night and i never got a dime. Starting over from scratch *****. They took EVERYTHING

Big Vise grips on the garage rails above the top roller will hold the door pretty good. Unless the landlady comes in w/o your permission I would install a motion detector alarm in the garage or on the doors. they do sell spackle there don' tthey?
