So there has been some less than desirable renters that moved in next door and I’ve been looking around for some security cameras for my shop and house. Needless to say I’m a bit lost. I’ve looked on Amazon and eBay, but I don’t what to end up with cameras that make everything look like amebas under a microscope. What have you guys used, any recommendations? Thanks for the help.

Ring cameras for the house and wired POE 4k camera system made by Qsee for a few retail stores.

Depends on what you need, stand alone powered units or multiple camera wired systems.

I got a great set last year from Lorex, they had great Black Friday sales. They have cameras that are true color night vision and HD quality.

I have the Arlo Pro 2 system with four cameras. Works great for my needs. I have one camera in a detached garage that’s about 50’ away from the house.

I have been happy with my IP based cameras. Basicly there Power Over Ethernet or POE. There suposto be 4k but dosnt show up that clear on my phone or non 4k tv. They are leaps and bounds better than my old analog system.

For a decent 4 camera system expect to spend at least $600+. Also if you think you only need 4 cameras get a 4 camera bundle but make sure the NVR is 8ch or more. This way you dont have to replace th NVR to add just one more camera.

I use Lorex (now owned by Dahua) IP cameras. The dome cameras have pan/tilt/zoom capabilities and they are excellent. They operate with POE from the NVR or through a connected POE switch remotely. I've had mine for over three years without problems.

Mine are 1080P HD, but now the camera technology has improved and 4K resolution is available.

I got my IP system from Nelly's. Their after sale support has been great. I believe they use mostly rebranded Hikvision cameras but not sure and it has been a few years.

I have a few of the Dahua camera's and looking to add a NVR. Is there any that you'd recommend/not recommend?

I've had good luck with Amcrest cameras...reasonably affordable, lots of options and styles, local sd card/nvr/cloud/ftp/etc. recording options, haven't had a failure of one yet in years.

I've done IP cams of various flavors.
Ring is great, but is expensive.
Best bottom dollar - ease of install - no reoccurring costs - https://wyze.com/ - you just buy outdoor housings for them and power them with USB. They do require decent wifi.

If you really want do to focused "watching" - you need 1080p or better, and you'll sacrifice width of zone for ability to see something far away. I recommend cameras from Nelly's.

Thanks for all the info, I think to cover what I want right now I’ll probably go with a four camera system with the ability to add more. From what I’ve seen Poe might be the way to go.

I should note that i have put a set of wifi cameras in a single family home, no more than 2,400sqft and could not get one camera location to work. NVR on one back corner and camera on same side of house but on the second floor. If you can get wires in there do a wired system. They to make ethernet to wifi camera adapters for that one camera that you cant get a wire to.

What’s the word on using these in an un-heated space? Will they still function in sub-zero (literally) temps?

I agree that POE is best - you get the speed of a wired connection and can get crazy resolution with that if you need it. IF doing the corners of a building (facing out) - I'd want 2 POE drops per corner.

Consider what features you want. For me, the interior of my shop has motion detection attached to my phone.

I'm in the south, but the few days of freezing doesn't seem to bother them. Outdoor camera IR does attract bugs. Spider webs can be a pain too.

For the spider issue some have used a separate IR light a few feet from the camera. Haven't set that up myself but seems like a good idea. Some cameras can use the power input as an output for the light if powering the camera with POE.

Have an Annke dvr and 5 cameras(so far, capable of 8), like the option of viewing on my phone. Night vision isn't perfect, but it's acceptable.

It took me a while to figure this out. I used to think an NVR did not have an internal disk drive. That's not true.
An NVR means that you can connect an IP camera to your network and the NVR will be able to see it and record it. You will have to have a power injector since a normal router won't provide power over the ethernet cable. Depending on where you want to place the NVR/DVR relative to the cameras, this may help.
A DVR has to have the cams connected directly to it.
Both of them have apps so you can watch them on your phone.

I have 7 blink cameras across two controllers. One zone is always armed while the second is armed at night and when I'm out of the house.

I have a specific camera to get every license plate that turns around in front of my house... every entry both from the outside and inside, in case they figure out how to disable the outside system.

I also have a second system by a different company watching too.

A third system is trail cameras scattered around my yard.

This will be my first season with camera's outdoors (I've had some mounted indoors in windows and such)...we've hit around -10*c at night without issue so far on my cameras. Once we get down to the -20/30c range it will be interested to see if they keep going.

Mind you both cameras are very well sheltered, one under the porch and one under the eve of my shed which is under my deck which has a water drainage system under it....so it will really just be a temperature test.
