I highly recommend getting dome cameras only. If you're bit tech-savvy, look into putting a system together (NVR, PoE switch, and cameras); else look at Costco for deal.

I am liking the POE camera that has server inside each of them. You have to select each one to view. But the advantage is one of the camera cannot bring down the whole system like a DVR does. You can still use it with a DVR since they send a h.264 stream.

I owne two of the GW Security systems and both have been up and working for almost a year, almost flawlessly and the setup was easy - plug and play.

^yup. 1080p isn't even enough because most people using a single camera with a wide view. During playback, at 1080p, the image is pixelated really fast trying ID a perp.
For the sake of "security", a lot of people get the mounting location completely wrong, it's mounted too high. I recommend to mount it 5-8ft, no higher because every thieves out there know that if it high, it can't catch their faces. Home Depot and Wal-Mart really changed the way they mount their cameras, they all mount it at about 5ft off the ground using dome camera, which are anti-vandalism.

I second the Hikvision.
I have a full system planned out, but waiting on some other things to finish before purchasing it.
With some of their cameras you can set it so it records to an SD card in the camera, or a full NAS setup if you'd want.
Setup seems rather easy for them and the images look pretty good.

I installed a Reolink NVR camera system, it is an 8 channel system and came with 4 cameras, I installed this myself, its been in for several months now, I think its a pretty good system, but am no expert in the security camera field. You can search on here and find many threads to read about security cameras and even a few experts on here to chime in. Mine is a POE system and came with 60' ethernet cables and a 2 TB NVR. I can see whats going on from my phone.

As part of my day job I installed one of those Lorex packages for a construction site. It was easy to set up. It will connect to the Internet if you give it a cable. It seemed quite good for the price.

Look into Swann, myself and several friends all have their systems. For about a grand you can get a DVR and 8 cameras that you can view online and on your phone. Haven't found anything for the same price that's better.

I like the Nest cams. I have 6 including 1 for my shop. Wireless. Easy setup, great app support. Easy to use and great picture.

Great night vision and daytime clarity. Monitoring 24/7 and get about 7 days of recording before overwrite. Phone monitoring app and PC app.
Had a security company connect and program. I did some preliminary work. About $3K with UV protected Cat6, 1500 VA UPS, custom roof mounts.

With 2TB storage, if properly set up to record (motion detection, line crossing, etc.) you should be getting much more than 7 days. My 8-camera installs typically go for 30 ~ 45 days when programmed correctly.
Assuming you have good bandwidth, if you can give me remote admin access, I could try and set-up for you.

I don't have any zones alarms, motion activation, etc. I want all 8 cameras running 24/7. I'm fine for 8 days or so.
It's a Hikvison DS-7600NI-E Series 4TB.

The "problem" with not using motion is searching for video afterward.
With motion turned on, you'll see little "blips" on the playback screen and can click these blips to see what happened at that moment. Without motion turned on, in certain circumstances, you'll have to watch 8+ hours of video to find what you're looking for. Just happened to a client who needed to see who walked out of their lobby with a stolen item.
Installers/clients who don't understand motion settings, don't realize there's pre-record/post-record settings. The NVR will capture/save the video for 5 seconds leading up to the motion and 5 seconds after the motion has stopped (and this is adjustable, e.g. 10 seconds pre-motion, 20 seconds post-motion).
With 4TB properly set up, you should have 60 to 90 days of recordings.

is there a security system for grandparents who dont have a computer or cellphone and are slow to adopt to newer technology ?
something i can just set up and leave it. and check back weekly and or easily review footage if they encountered a incident where the surveillance needed review ?

I did a homemade setup like others here. Hikvision cameras with blue iris running on a independent desktop for the DVR. As stated before I do not recommend getting the cameras from amazon. You will spend more for the real thing but they work out of the box.
