I found this tool in the dumpster at work, and it took me a while to figure out what it is. Hint....it does a very specific job, and nothing else. Im sure to those who need them they are indespensible, but to 99% of everybody else, they serve no purpose.

I'm sure somebody on here knows, but I want to hear some guesses.

I know exactly what it is because I used one in the electric shop building electrical cabinets!
Imagine that...I actually know this one!
You see, it is a notcher for notching anti rotation notches in holes where switches are inserted into the holes.
First you would knock out a 1/2" or so hole in a metal door and then notch the upper part of the hole with this tool so the anti-rotation washer would lock into the hole....

Makes the notches in these holes....

It is actually called a Greenlee 720 Keyway Punch...makes perfectly square notches everytime!

For industrail switches in cabinets....

...and now you know! Uh, sorry to burst your thread so soon....

Yep...that is exactly right. I thought for sure it would take longer to guess. I pulled it out of the dumpster thinking it was a large riviter, but saw Greenlee on the side so I knew it was some type of electrical tool. I have yet to find a use for it yet, but it's still cool and free!

Interesting. You just insert the end of that into the hole and squeeze? Does it make all four notches in one go?

No, one at a time.
The box I was showing was pre-punched by Allen Bradley and punched on all 60 degrees so you can mount the box in any position. The notch is usually on the top.

.....I thought that when I pulled it out of the dumpster.

It is an expensive tool. It probably got thrown out by accident. Why don't you ask your bosses and see if it belongs to the Company. It's not like you will be using it all the time, and besides, it's the right thing to do.

It was in the scrap metal bin, and not by accident, we used to make electric panels for some of our products but no longer make them. But if course I checked first.

A close up of the business end might have been better... but...

Wait... can this or can't this tool be used to fill jelly donuts ???

Sad news is... I think I have used that tool many moons and jelly donuts ago... for it's intended purpose.

I could use that every once in a blue moon but have managed to not have one for the 33 years I have been selling pressure washers.

If any of you have any ideas of what it can be used for besides notches, I'm all ears. I think it is cool. I'm sure if you are in the business of making electrical panels, it would be a huge time saver.
