I have a set of Cat wrenches that goes up to 1 1/2" but now I am looking to up it to 2". Cat tools are high and I picked them up used, and can't drop a grand+ to fill out the set. I see many sets that start at 1 1/4 but don't really need the duplicates. Are any of the eBay setsin the sub 300 dollar range recogmended? Also do I need the 1 9/16 or are some of the sizes less common as you step up in size? These will be first be used to disassemble hydraulic lines on scrapers, but I only want to buy one set in my lifetime. I much prefer buying used to harbor as I have picked up made in USA tools at prices that should make me money if I ever choose to part with them, though I doubt that day will ever come. Any recommendations on what route to go?

When I worked for CAT I purchased my large wrenches up to 2 1/2" from Snap-On industrial sales. They are black oxide coated. There was a substantial discount using the industrial division.

Check to see what Tekton has to offer. You could always upgrade piecemeal off the used market later as deals pop up. In the meantime you'd have a serviceable set to work with to earn a paycheck.

(I've been working on building a Williams set for two years now, but even used ones aren't cheap)

Most of my larger wrenches 1 1/2" and up have been bought used from Ebay and used tool stores or off CL. All are Williams SO Proto or other good quality wrenches. If your not in a rush to get them this is a good way to go. Otherwise I would also look into the SO black finish wrenches. I have a few 1/2" ratchets in the black finish. You just need too keep them oiled up.

All my big wrenches are Wrights. I have up to 2 1/2 in wright. 1" and below is Cat. Cat wrenches are relabeled Williams Supercombos.

Suggest hitting flea market for larger wrenches. New production US large wrenches are prohibitively expensive for individual purchase but are cheap as hell used.

You will also need large angle wrenches. Also get a Ridgid smooth jaw angle pipe wrenches.

Thanks guys! There's a proto set on cl I found that runs from 1" to 1 7/8ths for 225. I may go that route and pick up some Pittsburghs to fill in the gaps for now. I really appreciate the advice.

Buy used as they come up, that's what I'm doing, getting good used Euro brands for cheap, just got an Elora 205 for 2" £20 (about $30). If you need them now the cheap China sets with get the job done.
