I started this thread here instead of the Classifieds because I want to see the comments.......and others probably will too. If it HAS to be moved.......so be it.

My son just got his driver's license on 5/28/14 and is working on his first car. he wants to pay for it himself (he got a beater.......it is what he can afford at the moment) so helping out with parts etc is out....but I CAN help him out with some decent tools to start out with.

For Christmas, I found him an old set of Barcolo Buffalo SAE wrenches that had hardly ever been used. The roll was missing a couple of wrenches and a member here (OldToolMan) located the missing pieces and shipped them to me! AWESOME!

A few months ago, when Sears was dumping it's old stock, I pieced together a 14 piece set of Craftsman Industrial Black Oxide metric wrenches....and I was pretty impressed with them. For what he is going to use them for, they are perfect.

Went back to Sears website to see if I can piece together an SAE set, and I'm missing a few sizes. if anyone can help me find 11/32, 9/16, 11/16, 7/8 and 1 1/16 I would be grateful.

I did find some singles at Summit Racing.........but.......YIKES....$10 for a 9/16" Craftsman wrench????????:scared: PLUS shipping???????????

If any of you guys ended up with extras of these sizes and would be willing to part with them, I would appreciate it. Of course, I would pay a little extra....everybody has to make a buck.

Other than Summit Racing, Grainger or Global Industrial Supply (they only have sets), has anyone come across any other place that is selling singles?

Please post your comments here......I'm sure other guys would be interested as well.

Regards

They also pop up on eBay from time to time. You just have to keep checking till you find a price you can live with.

Cripes website is still off kilter.....shows 32 results....but only shows 2 items.........neither are what I'm looking for. Read in another thread they are working on the site.

Ace came back with nothing.

Thanks for the suggestions................anyone else?

Saw a listing for singles on ebay. $6.99 + $2.99 for shipping.

And a big thumbs up to your son for buying a beater and putting in the time.

I have a couple but I'm not going to sell them to you.

Sorry bro. To me they're awesome wrenches. A lot of the tool sellers bought up this stock because it was super cheap. My recommendation is to maybe get something else, possibly the kobalt set for under 10 bucks if you can still find it. Those are more than decent sae wrenches (taiwan) and easier to warranty. I won't sell you those either. Hahahahaha.

Another option is the craftsman x-treme access wrenches (or the harbor freight equivalent), those are pretty cheap but I'm not sure where they're made. That's under 20 bucks for the harbor freight under 30 for the craftsman.

I'd say the armstrong oxide wrenches are easily worth 5 bucks a pop for sub m-15 sizes (too lazy to look up or think about what the sae equivalent would be). There are other good wrenches. Can't always get what you want (cheap at least) but tool parity among brands for the cheaper brands is pretty good nowadays.

What I was trying to say is that while these are fantastic wrenches, your kid won't have a problem working with some other stuff.

Also in some of those larger sae sizes probably shouldn't be using a wrench unless it's got a slug end. If he's working on a hoopdie in a rust area maybe get him a cheap heat gun and some penetrating oil which will help him out more than a full complement of wrenches (if he's got decent sockets).

I'm not saying working with wrenches is "wrong", I'm saying it's more of a p.i.t.a. than a long(er) breaker bar and a socket. No glory in jacking your wrist trying to get off a high(er) torque bolt with a wrench; don't impress the ladies or the tool Gods.

I'm still not selling my wrenches.
