Hi everyone,

I've been in the aviation industry for about 15 years. Recently, I’ve realized that my large toolbox is more than I need, and it’s just been sitting unused. I’m hoping to sell it and downgrade to something more suitable for my current needs.

I’m looking for your help to determine a fair selling price. Here are the details:

Toolbox Information

  • Type: 68" Nine-Drawer Double-Bank EPIQ Series Roll Cab with Power Drawer and Speed Drawer (Royal Blue)
  • Model: KETP682A0PCM
  • Condition: Good, minimal wear from years of use
  • New Price: $16,345.00 (Snap-On website)

Work Top Information

  • Type: Powered truck liner work top
  • Specific Model: KWSP3068ABLM
  • Condition: Good, except for a small chip in the liner at the front center
  • Comparable Model: Bedliner Power Top with LED Light, 30" x 68" (EPIQ Series) - my model does not include the LED light
  • New Price: $2,170.00 (Snap-On website for comparable model)
I’ve attached photos of both the toolbox and the work top for your reference.

Your advice on a fair price would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Best regards,
Alex

Good luck, expect to be disappointed. Start high 60+% of retail and let the market dictate the final price. I’ve never purchased a New SO box, but I’ve read that during promotions they can be bought near 50% of retail New.

Unfortunately I think you are correct about being disappointed haha.

I’ll do a little research as to what’s currently being sold in my area (Fort Worth TX) and post it online and see what happens.

Thank you for the response and advice!

Where I live, almost new condition SO boxes start off at ~60% of list on FB and seem to sell for about 40%. But I think it'll be tough to even get 40% for that box at the prices you quoted. The majority of Americans don't have $500 in free cash, let alone $7K. But as said, start at 60% and be prepared to lower the price every two weeks.

I think you'll be lucky to get $6k. Once you get bigger than 54", the home enthusiast/DIY'er market dries up. What's left is pros and they usually already have boxes and when they buy they tend to finance vs paying cash.

I'd try contacting the dealer you bought it from and see if they'll sell it for you on consignment.

Unlike hand tools, SO boxes DO NOT hold their value. Guys can buy a 73" Icon roll cab for $3k.

That makes sense. I appreciate the feedback.

That’s a good idea. I’ll reach out to them. Thank you.

I’d list it for $9500 and see where it goes! Then again I just saw nearly the same box with a hutch listed for 10k kanucistan dollars 🤔 that puts you’re box around $7300 after exchange

The prices for toolboxes have gone up since you bought your box. If I were still in the hobby of toolbox buy, freshen and sell, I would try to get the original retail price for it. I do not know, but I have to think a new box, like the one you have has to be double what you paid.
I am so far away from your market. I wish you lots of good luck. If I were close, I would buy your toolbox and keep it. My MAC has cracked in the middle.

Last year I bought a real nice KRL box for 2k, about the size of yours, it was older but no dents and nice bright red. I think it is about 55" same drawers as yours but no lights. I would not sell unless you need extra cash.

Yeah I hadn’t really planned on selling it to be honest. But the extra cash would be nice to put towards a new toy. That being said, the toy can always wait a bit lol.

I agree with you that the prices have gone up. I find it interesting that you said the full value price though. I’m not disagreeing with you per se, but your answer is surprising to me if I’m being honest.

Do not let anyone rush you into sale. A new box is like an old box. Your box is in good condition. What does a new box at double the cost offer better than what you have.
The difference being a new box may be paid in installments. Utilty wise? No difference.
This one presents well and that matters to a lot of guys. Whatever the market is this example ought to do well.
Good luck to the OP. Perhaps this thread will attract a buyer;)

I think the consignment idea is a good one......that's how I found and bought mine - many decades ago - from my Snap On truck. Like others have said, people buy stuff like this on payments. If you just want to cash it out you may struggle finding a buyer with that much ready cash.

I agree with what you’re saying and think it’s definitely a good option to look into.
Like I said previously, I’ll definitely call my local dealer and explore this option.

Thanks for the advice / response.

I think it’s awesome you noticed.

I’ve worked all kinds of aviation jobs over the years. Started at a flight school working as an apprentice in general aviation (piston poppers) then worked heavy depot level maintenance on a military contract doing ACI inspections for the army (basically complete resets).
Currently I’m an AOG engine technician for private / corporate planes.

Plus I’m a huge history nerd so obviously the spitfire was always a cool aircraft to me.

Cool? Yes but in its day a killing machine, a good one. Today, a fabulous toy for the few that can afford it. A friend had the opportunity to fly one several years ago. He struggled for words to describe the experience.
Today is a grim reminder of that machine's original intent.

I absolutely agree with you. The capabilities for its time and the intent behind the design and uses for it at the time were very much impressive.
Thats really cool for your friend though. I’ve never had the opportunity to go up in one. Maybe one day I’ll get the chance.

That's a really nice box! Like most people have said, I would just trade it and pay off your tool truck account (if you owe anything) or get credit for future purchases. I've seen the smaller 54" boxes go for anywhere from $2500-$5000 on marketplace. No idea if they've ever sold however.

Here's a kind of similar box for sale local to me on Marketplace for $4k OBO. Granted it's a bit rougher than your box and doesn't have the top.

Snap On Epiq 68” toolbox

There's another guy local to me that has a business buying/selling toolboxes. Right now, he has a nice 68" Epiq for sale at $5500 but he offers financing, takes trade-ins, etc.

I think if you can get better than $5k for it you're doing really well, if you want to sell it reasonably easily/quickly $3-4k is the range I'd be expecting.

I paid $2800 for my KRL1022 and it was very clean with no dings or scratches. Guy had it listed for three months at $4500 and not much interest. New list with the butcher block top was right around $11K. As with selling anything the more you ask the longer it might take to sell. I would start around $7-8 and see if you can even find someone who gets in touch with you.

I just was at a Harbor Freight and saw that line. Really impressed, way better than I would have expected. I may buy one myself, was sort of in the market for a used Snap On box. In the past where I've looked at some, previous owners just couldn't get real on price. I think I offered like $7k for a new $16k retail box and the owner wouldnt even consider it. It was a hard to find color was the only reason I went that high.

I wouldnt want to be Snap On trying to justify a $16k retail price (even if no one pays retail)

The moral of the story here is:

If you plan on investing a large sum of money for a tool box, plan on keeping it for the rest of your life unless you're going to trade it in.

The Icon boxes are nice for the $. Where I'm located you can buy a similar size, like new condition, SO box for about the Icon price. And I'm not a SO booster, but at that point it makes sense to buy the SO; because I'm going to bet that you can get parts for the SO in 5 years, and probably 30, but probably not for the Icon in 5 years- and certainly not without them coming from China/Taiwan at best case. The issue is, as I said in my other post, small detail, paying for the purchase. You can use a CC at HF and make payments on the Icon to your CC company. For a FB type sale, you typically need cash. For the new SO box you can pay your dealer weekly. If people actually had cash to spend, and this is nothing new, SO boxes at 50% list would be gone in a day on FB. But they sit for weeks.

You said you were going to downsize, a dealer may give you a decent trade towards a smaller box and/or maybe sell it on consignment knowing he can sell/finance it.

The one thing I like about Snap-on toolboxes besides getting 12 new sets of drawer slides for free, is I can found them on a map!
