Just bought a new house with 30x40 metal shop and I'm looking to take advantage of the void between the horizontal metal beams (?) that run along the wall. It's already a shelf of sorts, but it's obviously narrow and there's only one/two(if I use a ladder).

I was thinking about building pipe shelves similar to some of these between the beams. pinterest.com/simplifiedbldg/industrial-pipe-shelves/ But looking for ideas and thoughts specifically to take advantage of this space and the beams that are there.

Here are a couple pictures. The green arrows are the areas I'm thinking of utilizing.

I like the industrial look. I also like low cost. So please share your ideas.

That's just gas line or ridged conduit. You and usually get it in black or galvanized. Get some parts and have some fun building.

Unless you just want the "Look" of pipe shelves, I'd vote for something more useful, and adjustable.

First thing that came to mind when seeing your steel skeleton, is Unistrut. You could actually mount the shelving to the walls and keep the floor clear underneath. This would give you tons of adjustability and options.

Also, a big rack with lockable casters would be handy in your big shop.

Great shop.

The unistrut looks really promising. Where can I get some of that to play with? Is it economical? Are there knock offs available that are cheaper?

Lots of options for Unistrut. There are also Superstrut and cooper/B-Line products that are all interchangeable with each one. Lowes and HD sell some small common items but your plumbing, electrical or Grainger stores sell more choices.
Just remember to get the 12 gauge for shelving. The 7/8" sticks at lowes or HD are 14 gauge. Strong enough for most applications but better to be safe.
Unistrut web site has lots of engineered information (beam, column load bearings) for building what ever you want.
