Anyone ever sell a car on eBay? How did it go? I have a few questions for you about this. I'm thinking of doing it and don't want to make any mistakes.

I have sold a few on ebay
none were in the high price range and the buyers were always happy with what they got

I prefer local pickup to try to avoid the foreign scams.
I sold one car to a guy in australia, I had him do a bank transfer into an account that I opened just for that at a bank other than the one I use and then closed the account right after pulling the money out.

sold one to a guy in canada and he drove down to get it

I've sold two, an older 911 and a 65 Mustang GT. Both went very well with no hassles. Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

What is the best way to handle the funds? I'm willing to take a personal check but as I have stated in my auction, the car will not be released for pick up, by the owner or shipper, unless the funds have cleared and are in my account.

I've never dealt with bank transfers as the receiver.

Any suggestion of what is a must for the auction? What disclaimers should I put in?

I've sold two on ebay, had no trouble.

One was local, cash in hand, with immediate title transfer.

The other was long distance. I required an immediate, non-refundable down payment of $1000 to hold it. I was sent a check for the rest, and waited until funds had cleared my bank for the required 10 days. After that, I took it out of the garage, and pushed it into my yard. I notified him funds cleared, sent the title, and told him the shipper could pick it up whenever.

I sold one on eBay as well. Buyer flew down to drive it home. No issues with the funds, but he drove it back without checking the oil, and claimed it was my fault it was low. The only negative feedback I ever got on eBay.

I have also bought 2 vehicles on eBay, and did OK with both.

I've bought and sold several cars on eBay. I've never had a problem.

Cars sold:

'72 Corvette Stingray
'64 Chevelle SS Convertible (man, I wish I would have kept this)
'75 Chevy Monza with factory 350
'67 Ford Ranchero
'47 Chevy Truck
'97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Purchased:
2002 BMW 330XI (bought in 2003)
2004 Ford F150 Lariat Supercrew (bought in 2006)
2006 Triumph Sprint ST w/ABS

In the case of the ones sold, I required a non-refundable $500 deposit within 72 hours. The Corvette, Monza, Chevy Truck and Ranchero were paid for in Cash. Be careful here. Walking into the bank with $15k in cash will require them to send a report to the FBI. No issues fortunately. The Chevelle was paid for with bank check.

The purchased cars were all paid for SIGHT UNSEEN. I sent a bank check and had them delivered. I still own the BMW and F150 and had ZERO issues.

I now ONLY buy my cars on eBay. The deals are just too good. For shipping, I use uShip.com.

There are scammers out there, but 99% of transactions are great, even for large ticket items.

if you sell the car long distance then get the buyer to pay via certified funds drawn on a large bank that is local to you. then you can go get the funds from that bank and you know you are in the clear.
any BS like I am going to pay you more and you refund the difference...bla bla bla and you can call it off. .....scam city.....

a guy in texas baught a car from me and sent me certified funds. picked up the car a week later

I've bought a couple cars on ebay.. and sold about 4 of them. On the selling I always make sure I get certified funds. Its gotta be a cashiers check or even paypal. Yeah you lose a few $$ on paypal but its secure. The car doesn't roll onto the trailer, etc until its paid for. I've actually got one on ebay at the moment. So far I've yet to have anyone pick one up in person and of the 4 I've sold 3 of them were to sellers with little/no feedback. They had signed up basically just to bid on the car. Kinda odd in my book but I guess that section of ebay attracts people who aren't typical ebay shoppers. So that can be a good and bad thing. I always list that if you have a zero feedback rating; etc you must contact me before bidding.

Question:

I know for the stuff I sell on eBay (ranging between $10 and $500) when you calculate ALL the fees associated with selling (which takes awhile, since they take a little here and a little there...listing, selling, PayPal...) you lose about 20% selling on eBay.

For cars, I'm certain the percentage isn't that big (bigger items take smaller percentages), but has anyone crunched the numbers to see what percentage you actually keep?

On automobiles ebay has now changed to a "flat rate"... basically to atrract more dealer type sellers. Its $125 if you sell the car and a free listing fee for up to 4 cars (I think that 4 cars is a yearly/annual deal vs. long term). Yeah however ebay is taking a chunk anymore.. its pretty disconcerting. Although they've added some "free" features that you used to pay for. Free single pic hosting, gallery type photos on every item, etc. You can really argue both ways... but they are in business to make $$. No different than having a private auction and paying auctioneer fees, etc.

My experience has been that the prices were kind of low. I didn't get any more than my absolute minimum on my '66 Charger, and I think I got a great deal on my '85 Power Ram. I used certified checks both ways. I put the Charger on a train to Wyoming and flew to Atlanta to drive the Power Ram home. I made two mistakes on that deal. I should have bought a round-trip ticket (the truck was very dissapointing in person) and I should have brought cash instead of the certified check for the whole amount, to give me some room to negotiate.

I think it cost me about $160 to sell a truck for 4Gs on ebay, so the cut wasn't that bad.

I personally have sold 3 vehicles on ebay. All of them were old navy trucks- basically just a shell and no title.

I had like 10 pictures and a 1000 word desc. The description was clear an honest on all- in short stating they are getting a frame and body panels (no drivetrain). The first two i sold they buyer was thrilled. Fast payment and good feedback. The last one I sold, got me my only bad feedback. The buyer was upset because he couldn't drive the truck home. I even had printed a copy of the description (including where it said no drivetrain) for him when he picked it up. Still he was insistent he should have been able to drive it home. :lol_hitti

All but one were paid by certified check which i waited for to clear before releasing the vehicle. One was paid by cash. No issues with any of the payments.
