Its pretty crazy to me there is a whole page of people who like the same things I do! I’ve been buying tools and working on things since I was around 12 years old. I was fortunate to be able to build a woodworking shop with my dad and grandpa at a young age, and now I’m finally building my own shop at my house! Over the last several years I’ve really gotten into vintage machinery and antiques in general. I have a large (and still growing) collection of vintage woodworking and metal working machinery. This shop will primarily house all my machinery and be my man cave/woodworking/machine shop/repair shop. It will also function as part of my sign and graphics business. I’m making every effort to make it feel like you’re stepping back in time when you walk in.

Hopefully this thread will help me share the progress, get ideas for ways to improve the build, and help others who are building a shop!

Here are the basics:
-30x50 “carport” style metal building
-12’ side walls, 16’ peak
-(1) 12’ wide, 10’ tall roll up door and (2) walk in doors
-4”-5” fiber reinforced concrete pad, stained with acid stain and sealed with Eagle Armor Seal
-Currently working on the 2” foil faced insulation boards

The current anticipated floor plan:

Some pictures from start to current are attached!

A fellow member ran across this thread and sent to me because I’m about to embark on the same building, 30x50x12. I’m supposed to receive the engineered drawings this week so hopefully start on slab early January. May I ask what your building and slab costs were?
Thanks, I’ll be following a long.

p.s. If you don’t mind, can you add your state or region to your About?

Without going back and looking at my papers, I think I had about $22,000 in the building and slab. I went with a lot of upgrades like vertical metal, 1’ overhangs and roof insulation. I got a deal on the concrete through a family friend. The price on the building had gone up $4,000 in two months from my first quote, so I went ahead and put the down payment on it before it kept going up. From what I understand now the price is significantly higher than what I paid. If I can help with anything else let me know! And oh yeah, I’m just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Welcome to the Garage journal Sellers It's my Happy place I hope it will be yours too.
I have a work shop with almost the same dimensions.
Mine is a converted horse barn that I redid. It is 36 wide by 52 long with 1 man door and a 12x10 roll up door
I restore old tools and automotive equipment as my hobby along with building a hotrod now and then. I'll be dropping by from time to time to follow up on your progress. Again welcome

Awesome looking build, following along!

Looking at that layout...you have a line on that shaper identified as "future"? I know where a 24" one is that recently was moved out of a hobby shop(but still under roof) if you're interested. Bad part is it's in Kansas, but seller isn't in a rush and can load without issue...if interested or want to know more PM me.

Welcome! Looking forward to following along. In concord fairly often these days visiting family and have some old machines myself. Building looks great, do you mind sharing the manufacture? there are several down the road in Mt Airy.

I’m a little behind on updating, but nothing real exciting has happened. The insulation is basically finished. 2” foam board with all seams foil taped. I planned on running 1x4s horizontally to attach the paneling to, but they weren’t stiff enough. I picked up a load of 2x4s and started attaching them to the wall. I’m using wood to metal self drilling screws. It’s a long painful process, but I think it’ll pay off in the end. I decided to go with beadboard paneling due to price (even though it’s still way too expensive for what it is). There is 8’ of paneling with old barn tin as the lower 4’ of the wall. I’ll have a 1x4’ as chair rail trim in the middle and baseboard.

Hopefully within the next week or two I’ll get the 10’ x 30’ loft framed in. I’m planning on running 2x10s along the walls and across the front as a header. I’ll use 2x8s as the floor joists. I’m also going to start building the sliding barn doors soon.

With my dad’s help we got the back wall framing for the loft finished up yesterday! I decided to wrap each steel post with lumber. On each side there is a 2x2 that extends up behind the 2x10. On the face I put a 2x4 that supports the 2x10 beam. It’s all screwed together and screwed into the steel posts. Since the 2x2s stick out past the edges of the 2x4s, this gives me somewhere to attach the horizontal 2x4s that I’m securing my paneling to. It’s going to be overbuilt, but I’d rather it be that way!

For a woodworking shop, where will be storing supplies, especially lumber? I'm in the midst of organizing my shop....shelves to hold my 15 bins of misc parts, so they won't be on top of each other, and a vertical storage bin with 3 sections, for storing misc pipe and wood pieces.

Looks very similar to my 30x50 x 12 except I did 2 12 ft wide x 10ft tall doors. If you got your building and concrete for 22k that is an absolute steal. Just my concrete was 20k. Building was 27k and doors were another 5500 with openers. Haven't even got to the point of wiring it yet.

There will be some storage on the loft, and I’ll be keeping my lumber rack in my basement. Once all the machines move in I’ll start organizing and working out the storage.

I was very fortunate to get my order in before prices went crazy. I also did as much of the work myself as I could. I haven’t wired mine yet either. That’s looking like it’s going to cost me more than the whole building!

I ordered mine in May 2022 and had it installed in February. But it looks like you had a nice level lot. Mine is on a stem wall over 6 ft tall, and there was a lot of extra I had to do to make the town happy. Look forward to your progress!

It’s starting to look like a loft now! We got the 6x6 posts set and the first 2x10 headers up. I’ll be adding the second row of 2x10s and then lagging it all together. I’m also adding 4x6 posts at each front corner. The 6x6 posts are notched to accept the doubled up 2x10 header. Should be solid!

Looks great, that loft is really coming along. What sort of footers did you put in for the 6x6 posts?

Another quick update… the loft is pretty much finished! I bolted the 2x10s together with 1/2” carriage bolts and structural lag screws into the posts. I also added these nice (and overpriced) T plates to finish it off. All of the flooring is down after a quick trip back to Home Depot due to a miscalculation. I just need to wrap up a couple little details when I get time. As of right now I’m planning on building a rolling library style ladder for access to the top.

Next up, I’ll be getting back on the wall paneling and building a corner work bench under the loft.

The loft looks great, nice work. How tall is the area under the loft and the loft itself?
Thanks! There is exactly 8’ to the bottom of the floor joists under the loft. The peak of the roof is roughly 17’, so I have around 8’ of headroom in the center up top and then it tapers down to around 3-4’ at the sides.

Awesome that should make for a nice usable area under the loft and and excellent storage area in the loft. Good work and planning!

Looking good. Did you compare the foam board to spray? How are you liking the foam board?
Will power be surfaced mount emt?

Yep you ordered at the right time. My 30x50x12 vertical siding (just door openings) was 25k. Slab was 25k but I did require grade beams. Cost includes 20x50 apron. Hopefully building goes up in a couple of weeks.

Thanks! I did compare, I got a quote for $11,000 for spray foam, not including the ceiling. The foam board cost me less than $2,000. I’m sure it won’t be as efficient, but at the end of the day it’s a shop and I couldn’t justify the extra $10,000 just for insulation.

The power will be exactly that! My county code requires the power to be either in conduit or armor cable in metal buildings. I figured since I had to do that, I might as well run it surface mounted to make changes easier in the future.

Wow, that’s crazy how much prices have gone up. I thought they were out of their minds when they told me what mine was going to cost. I guess it’s the price we have to pay to have a cool shop!

Well… I guess this is the first machine to “officially” get moved into the shop. This WW2 era radial drill showed up at an auction, I decided I had to have it, and the rest is history. My forklift is a 5,000 lb. lift and it was right at the edge of its capacity. Definitely heavier and more awkward to rig than it looks!

I think I’m going with Vega as well, concrete will be by others. anything you’d do differently?
I’m pretty happy with the building. As far as options, I did the extended 1’ eaves, vertical roof and siding metal, and chain driven door. I’m not at all happy with the walk in doors. I asked for standard residential doors and not the cheap shed doors. They used cheap shed/mobile home doors that look like normal residential doors haha. Make sure to be there when they put the building up to watch them. They did good for the most part, but there was s few things I had to get on them about. They didn’t put the bottom trim/rat guard on (it’s an extra step). When I asked about it the installer said “oh you don’t need that” and I told him I did in fact need it and I paid for it, so they went back and put it on.

A little update. Paneling the inside is moving along slowly but surely. Attaching the 2x4s to the metal framing is slow and labor intensive. Both side walls are done, I just have the finish the barn tin along the bottom. The insulation on the back wall above the loft is finished, and we started on the framing for the paneling. Old machines continue to find their way home with me… making it harder to work with them in the way haha.

I have to decide on a wall color soon. I think I’m going to go with a solid color stain on the paneling. Right now I’m leaning towards a gray/green (a little less green than what’s in the mock-up drawing I attached)… I want it to feel like an old machine shop inside. Thoughts?

Looking great. I not old enough to have been in a machine shop of operating 50 or 70 years ago...however i've been in a few machine shops. It seems to mee most i've seen have darkish green, gray or blue the bottom 4 or 5 feet of the wall, then white higher up, sometimes with an accent stripe between. I think the idea was to make oil splashes and grime less noticable on the lower portions of the wall where they accumulate and maximize light reflection with white on the upper wall. However, i'm not sure if this theme was used as much in years past or if it is something that became common in the last 25 years...
