That is something that I wouldn't know how to handle! Even if or when that day would ever come for me it would be hard to let go. Even if circumstances demanded.

Every one of us will be there someday. Some of us sooner than others.

We need to properly manage our collections while we still can.

Certainly don't want some family member selling our beloved collections for pennies on the dollar after we croak.

We need to have a plan.

Whatever the circumstances that got him to this point, good or bad.....you know he really doesn't want to let his tools go....

....look at the second to last picture, at the look on his face as he looks on the wrenches he's used and enjoyed for 30 years

35G's is a lot for someone starting out who would need the whole package. I can see 25G's if he pieced it all out on ebay and took his time.

As a package, maybe 15 - 20G's if he finds the right buyer in this economy.

I love looking at those massive boxes only to see that the drawers are barely being utilized. Pliers in pics 12 and 13 can easily fit into one drawer. Total overcompensating.

The ad (pics) only show 13 drawers of a 37 drawer upper and lower box not counting the 2 (full?) lockers and 2 carts (although one cart looks empty).

Yeah, he'll be hard pressed to get what he asking in this economy.

Pure opinion based on a blurry picture that might not even be the owner. If someone really does not want to let there tools go they won't. Those are his work tools that is how I am seeing this, whats to say he does not have all the tools he needs or wants in his own garage, shop, home, or where ever? Do you know him to say he is selling his life away?:dunno: My tools are a part of my life but not my life, my family is however.

"FOR SALE AS WHOLE PACKAGE: $80,000.00 WORTH OF SNAP ON TOOLS WITH A VERY LARGE TOOL BOX, (10ft.long.6ft.tall,30"deep) FOR $35,000,00. AUTO TECH IS RETIRING. IMMACULATE CONDITION. SNAP ON TOOLS ARE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS. THEIR PRODUCT IS THE FINEST AND THEY STAND BY THEIR TOOLS. OWNER HAS BEEN WITH EMPLOYER FOR OVER 30 YEARS.WOULD BE GREAT VALUE FOR SOMEONE SERIOUS IN THIS LINE OF WORK. WE WILL NOT FINANCE, CASH ONLY, CALL ONLY.

ASK FOR J.R. NO TEXTS. WILL GIVE MORE DETAILS BY PHONE. CASH AND CARRY ONLY -NO MONEY GRAMS- NO PAYPAL- NO SHIPPING BY US. IN PERSON DEALING ONLY. NO,NO, SCAMMERS! FACE TO FACE ONLY! [THAT IS Thirty- Five THOUSAND] $35,000.00. THESE PICTURES ONLY SHOW A SMALL PORTION OF WHAT COMES WITH THIS PACKAGE> 2 END CABINETS, FULL, 2 roll around, creepers. with over 30 drawers, it is filled to the seams. Well worth the asking price! Also have special tools for that one special job. "

As for the craiglist posting it is rather rude IMO and in all caps why? Also whats with saying snapon is the best .bla bla.. snapon stands by, people who buy this amount of snapon tools will know snapon. Its like they are trying to sell the brand not the tools here. Just the way the post is written turns me away. lol like scammers are going to listen to "no no". and spelling out the price, really? sounds like someone I do not want to deal with at all, just a cocky ******* selling someone elses tools. "WE WILL NOT FINANCE" whats with the we? sounds like the shop the guy worked for may be selling the tools.
:dunno: All I know is I would walk away for that price and posting, not worth it IMO.

Notice he focused only on Snap On stuff, and there is a bit of other stuff in there.
My drawers are filled more than his are and I have about 10 boxes, including a KRL 1032 & a KRL 1033 on the want list(waiting for good price).
I have ordered things from my snap -on guy that he has never sold before and he has been a dealer over 30 years.
But I would not expect to get anywhere near what I have paid for the tools, it is generally understood that they will not retain top dollars sold as one lot. If you part it out and ebay the items you can do better. But anyone with that much cash is not going to buy used or not at top dollar. You do better buying new and taking the tax credit for them.
I plan to leave it for my son, I hope he develops a liking for tools. Or he will have a massive amount of steel to sell.

I can't imagine anyone just handing him 35K for his stuff.

There aren't many mechanics who have that kind of cash.

Tool polishers enjoy buying tools piece by piece.

Bargain hunters like bargains.

Exactly! All three situations are true.

The only circumstance I can see is working for a company like UPS. Every tool on site that you own is documented. In turn, should anything get stolen it's covered. However that won't happen with the top notch security. Last weird circumstance (before my time) was Katrina hit and the building got flooded. Oddly enough, the water stopped short a foot of the shop. Had it not, insurance would have covered the documented tools. I can see a guy who gets handed a 15k check for 40k in tools (most guys do a b.s. inventory each year to not waste time, hence not getting your full money) making an offer on a set like that.

That's a one in millions chance that circumstance happens.

tl,dr... Mechanic who's entire collection gets damaged on site and receives a check from corporate or insurance for a partial value would be the only possible customer for that. Very rare circumstance.

To me, this ad reeks of a quick flip with no emotional connection. They are lazy and they are hoping to make money fast with almost no effort. It even looks like all the pictures were taken from the inside of a storage unit, not a garage or shop. My guess is that someone with no emotional involvement just won the bid on this storage unit at an auction and now they are trying to flip it. The 30 years as a mechanic storyline was probably what they were told by the auctioneer.

Ad claims ask for "JR". Fan in pic 4 is marked "JR Scott".

I imagine he moved his box into a storage unit when he retired.

Certainly not definitive proof, but still a plausible scenario.

Now, who is this person with 35k in cash to hand over for a set of tools? Not sure who the market is.

Does the snap on warranty transfer over to a new owner?

Despite everyone lies about it and Snap On will generally warrantee things without a lot of questions the warrantee does not transfer.

35G's is a lot for someone starting out who would need the whole package. I can see 25G's if he pieced it all out on ebay and took his time.

As a package, maybe 15 - 20G's if he finds the right buyer in this economy.

I've never run into a mechanic who could afford or wanted to buy a whole tool set at one time. I see 10k-15k if parted out. Maybe 20k if you can get a good price for the box. One problem is very few people are in the market for a high dollar box. On of the reason people buy from Snap On is they can make payments on it. It is entirely possible to spend 80k especially with specialty tools. The problem is specialty tools don't sell well.

It would most likely take 100~300 hours to part out a collection that sized. Some of it will sell quickly locally, but then you have to meet with people and they are all flakes. Most will end up on Ebay. Ebay takes at least 10%. Shipping will generally eat another 10%. Likely you will lose several pieces to scammers. Even with EBay you have to account for the time to clean, photograph, and document everything. Then you have to create the listings and finally you have to package and ship. It takes more time then you would think.

I do this for fun/hobby once or twice a year. People are always insulted by my offer and no one takes me up on it the first time. It is amazing how many people call me back a month or two later after they have hauled their collection around pawn shops and sold of some of the easy stuff on Craigslist.

that guy probably told his wife what it was all worth, so she said post it for sale or else... so he did, in the most unreasonable manner he could think of...

I pretty much have the same thoughts that've been said already. Nobody fresh out of school or starting out has 35K to blow on tools. To think you're gonna just unload that at somebody's door and walk out w/ 35K is kind of silly. Only way to sell that IMO opinion is by lots or sets. He's retiring so what's the hurry? Lol.

Nobody gets all nostalgic when a logger retires and sells his skidder and slasher, or a farmer sells his combine.

These tools were all paid for by the taxpayer through depreciation write-odds on his income taxes anyway.

Time moves on.

After 30 years of using those tools, he has gotten his money worth. So he should just give me his address where I can pick it up free. Makes for a clean break.

Funny, you can tell a lot about the skill level a guy has by seeing his toolbox and equipment and how he keeps it. I would bet he was damn good at what he did.

May not always be the case...just sayin

This box has been for sale for a LONG time. I want to say the ask started out a lot higher.

It's not even the most unreasonable one locally. Higher price, less details in a local ad paper:

Of all the comments posted to this thread I think this is the most important one. Not trying to dismiss the rest of the conversation but I have seen a lot of messed up family and friends due to lack of a plan for when we pass or become incompetent.

Yep, lots of expensive equipment also gets parked 'out back' once it's been paid for and depreciated.

I highly doubt it. Most of the older techs I know that are nearing retirement cant wait to get rid of their tools and never look back. I've tried to recruit some to be tool truck owners and they dont want to have anything to do with the automotive industry. Can you blame them, after 30-35 years?
And no, Snap On warranty does not transfer to the new owner. Unless you bought the tool from that dealer, most dealers will not warranty it.

$115,000 in south Florence? That would equate to 1,000,000,00 anywhere else (I know, I've been to Florence, SC.) :lol_hitti

Not sure where these guys get their pricing from but it's a free country. Unfortunately what things are worth and what people are willing to pay can be quite different.

I would hope these guys don't think a toolbox full of tools is a viable retirement financing strategy...

Even if we accept the proposal that there's $80K retail of tools there, in a collection built over 30 years, and we, for the sake of argument, assume that they're all Snap-On, would it be reasonable to assume that a large portion of these tools are old variants that Snap-On has long-since improved?

I'm talking "better" ratchets (Dual 80), better sockets/wrenches (i.e. FD/FD+), etc.

I mean, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the older tools, just that I'd imagine there's a large group of people that would prefer newer production stuff with the newer innovations, and these types of ads (I see them locally to me, too) always seem to assume that their 30 year old ratchets and wrenches are worth what the new stuff is.

Not a fortnight goes by that I don't see someone on CL or eBay trying to hawk an 730-series or 832-series ratchet, and making the claim "you'd have to pay $*** to buy this ratchet new today!" with $*** being the online price of an 80-series.
