Basically, the more of a rush you're in to sell things, the less it will go for. There is usually a person out there willing to pay a little bit more for that particular tool, but waiting is the most effective way to get him/her to see your listing.
Does anyone have any tips for selling tools and such on Ebay? Or is there a better choice? In my experience, eBay is the only way to go. Craigslist, Offerup, etc. are nothing but a PITA - having to deal with endless tire kickers and flakes. Not to mention having to meet interested parties somewhere other than your house (don't ever do that). Unless it's something too big to ship or if you want to sell a ton of stuff as a lot, stick to eBay
How do you determine a fair price on stuff that there is no history on, such as special tools? Use your best judgement, set the price a bit higher than you think is 'market value' and see what happens. You never know, I've had people jump on ebay listings that I thought were too high. If no one bites, lower the price.
How do you decide a reserve if you have no idea what it should sell for, and considering you don't just want to give it away? Start high. If you're not in a hurry, keep it high but within reason.
How do you figure out shipping cost ahead of time? Anything too big to fit in one of those one price post office boxes will have to be calculated based on where it's going, right? Correct. ebay has a pretty streamlined system for calculating shipping provided you input the item's dimensions and weight correctly
Will big stuff sell if not local pickup? some of these things will probably be too expensive to ship economically - will they sell at all if you specify local pick up only? Seems like you really cut your market if you do that. It doesn't hurt to list it as pick-up-only, just please put your location in the description if it's pickup only. NO ONE does this, but it would save me from clicking on so many listings on the east coast.
If you indicate local pickup only, would it be just as likely to sell on Facebook marketplace instead, and for free? The more places you list your stuff, the better chance you have to sell it.
