Ok, I'm back from the 2013 editions of the AAPEX/SEMA shows that were held this week in Sin City. I don't think the feeling in my feet will return until maybe Sunday.
Here are a few observations:

Scantools: I think almost everyone from OTC (Bosch) to Autel launched new platforms at eith AAPEX or Sema this year. Android based wireless type platforms seem to be popular. They aren't cheap but, are fast.

SK: had a nice large end booth with all of their superchrome glory on display. They had a neat two piece trim tool set consisting of an indexable head trim fastener forked pry bar attached to a green screwdriver handle. A second trim tool consist of a green surgrip handle with a thin curved blade on one end for removing two piece trim fasteners and a thin punch on the other side for pushing center pins often found on Toyota trim fasteners. Good stuff! Watch for SK to release new tools in 2014, especially a new line of US made fine toothed ratcheting wrenches.

WILDE: Wilde had a tiny booth exciled away over by the LVH with other first time exhibitors. Although off the beaten path, they had an assortment of punches, chisels and flush joint pliers.

KNIPEX: Had a selection of pliers that were definitely drool worthy. They had a new type of hose clamp plier that is basically a 10 inch pair of Cobra fast set pliers with small pivoting jaw pads. I'm not really sure if I liked this set or not, I would need to use it awhile to see.

KOBALT Yep, the end is near. Kobalt had an outside display at SEMA showing most of their line.

GEARWRENCH: probably had the most real estate for a tool manufacturer at SEMA. They featured the new long 84 tooth ratchets, a new set of pivoting cutters and short long nose pliers that have a fulcrum like Knipex. Gearwrench's pliers will now feature red dipped handles instead of the current black grips. The Gimbal ratchet was also there. They also had the rest of their line on display.

There were many other booths such as craftsman, channelock, IR, CP, and many Asian made lines such as Genius, King Tony, Jonnesway, Astro, V8, etc.

Lastly, for those of you that like buying snap on lights, knives, vacuums, or pressure washers from any where but a snap on truck, is a picture of the Alltrade booth's wall of Snapon at AAPEX. I never take a lot of pictures so, don't whine. It's hard for me to tote my bags of swag and hold a camera. However, I think 2014 will be a good year for new tools.

Did they have little cables attached to the SK wrenches so people wouldn't steal them? :D

I'm headed back now.
We bought a 20 ton press and some parts for my dad's car.
Lincoln welders had a deal on their welding helmets plus a bag of swag with gloves, welding coat and stuff so I got that too

First time I have seen snap on there with their booth. Didn't have much other than their large service equipment and lifts like chain shops would buy

Craftsman was there too. 2 booths.
One was in the hallway between the halls. That one had cheapie low line ****. Can't believe they even brought that stuff.
The other booth had their decent mid grade boxes and some tools. Very stupid that they didn't even really show off any of their specific, specialty, or diagnostic tools like you think they would

No. However, many manufacturers leave the tools in the original packaging. Whenever you fondle their tools, a booth person is close at hand.

There were some deals to be had. Some guy bought the whole Knipex booth before the show was over. :wtf:

Sorry, no. The ratcheting wrenches were only talked about and not on display. The trim tools were prototypes without part numbers due out around March.

1) In spite of SEMA not being opened to the public it seems
that anybody/everybody that wants in knows somebody ??

2) I was at the LVMS from Oct 24-27 at the NHRA Natl event
(where we won the Super Stock category) and had I planned
should have stayed for SEMA.
Can you suggest where some of the best value lodging is ??

3) From your lodging were you able to walk to the SEMA show
halls or ???

4) Were you doing this by yourself or with a friend ???

5) Did you do any of the traditional Vegas stuff .....gambling
entertainment, fine dining???

Thanks for your expert commentary on the world of tools

Not sure if I did this right, but someone asked for a picture of the SK body pin puller set.
Hope I did it right.

his my review for you

1) 2013 was bad timing for sema and nationals since sema was 1 week later after the races, usually its back to back weeks. 2014 its races weekend then straight into sema week which fits perfectly for any gear heads week vacation. thats what i do take 1 week off from work for races on the weekend then week of sema for work.

2,3) i usually stay at a hotel along the monorail route so its easier for me to get to the convention center instead of driving. its expensive during sema week but i write that off as work travel. theres a couple motels and hilton hotel that s walking distances from the convention center.

4) ive been to sema by myself and years with friends. be prepared to WALK miles. seriously miles of things to look at

5) sema pass holders get hotel discounts and show/food discounts during sema week. some shows are buy one get one free or upgrade seating. everything else is prices are higher during convention week

The larger tool has an adjustable position head like some of the newer prybars but is designed to get under the head of XMAS tree fasteners and pry them out.
The other tool was for both styles of the rivet style plastic fasteners. The offset end is for pulling the center pin style and the other side is a punch for the kind that you push the center pin through the center of the fastener to release.

You did GREAT!!

I think SK should make the handle slimmer on the combo tool though. It's really too big but, they seem to be trying to use one size handle for everything lately. Thanks for sharing.

Bosch, their equipment is not worth buying.Bosch does not stand behind their equipment and it is yours after buying it with no tech support. No reps at all too, they either get fired or quit.It is hassle with tech support doing it online what I have been told.I know a former Vetronix rep that was forced to retire by Bosch. It was after Bosch bought out Vetronix,he was one of two reps making the big money and Bosch did not like this. They wanted to cut his commission and pay which he was forced to retire.
