chrome: Gearwrench. look for a buy one get one special. You would hard pressed to find a nicer finished socket anywhere. The deep knurling on the socket base is simply outstanding!!!

Impact: Sunex. What i really like about this set is it includes 21 & 22 mm sizes. Most other sets stop at 19 mm.

Something both sets offer is value. you get a lot for your money

I agree with Fedwrench on all points. I switched my semi deeps from Snap-on to a Gearwrench set, and have zero regrets. Only chrome sockets I keep in the service truck, and the shallow broach on the Snappys screwed me a couple of times.

Every impact socket/adapter/extension I've bought from Sunex has been top notch.

Count me in with fed as well. My 1/4" mids are snappy's but my 3/8 are GW's and all though you can feel the better fitment of the SO's the GW have performed flawlessly.

For chrome sockets i have a mix of Facom and Halfords Advanced. The halfords sockets are good for the money and have a lifetime warranty, but you wont find them unless your in the UK. The Facoms are excellent and cheaper than most of the other top brands.

All of my impact sockets are cheap-ish ebay specials and i've never had a problem with any of them, they get at least 90% of the work and as a result i've never worn out a chrome socket, never worn out an impact socket either but lost a few unfortunately.

I like to have a good mix of 12 point and 6 point sockets, as well as torx, spline, triple square and invert hex etc.. For the torx and hex i would recommend wera. For Spline and triple square we use Mac, however the same bits are available branded as Facom for a bit less (Both owned by Stanley)

I'd get the GW from ebay the 1/4 is under $25 and 3/8 under $30 brand new. They sell GW at advance auto and prices on shallow are same as mid depth on ebay.

I don't have any mid lengths but my 3/8 chromes are gearwrench & impacts are sunex. Shallow deep & swivel on both. I've been very happy with both.

the gearwrench semi deep chromes are very nice but I don't care for the deep broaching.

The Carlyle mid depths are nice. I have a two sets that I've beat on for over a year with no complaints.

I haven't tried a Carlyle socket, but been my experience with GearWrench and Kobalt is that they put the detents one half a friction ball width over from where they should be.

Why did you switch?

Snap on had them on sale. not sure if they still are

In my region they are in the September flyer, get a set and get a free QR ratchet.

I got the chrome 1/4 & 3/8 Gear Wrench mid length. They are very nice. The buy one get one deals can't be beat. Got Grey Pneumatic 3/8 impact mid length. Sunex 3/8 impact wobble extensions. Can't beat either one. Reasonable prices on both if you look around.

I've got a student discount with Carlyle that makes the set fairly comparable to gearwrench so I've decided to go that direction. I didn't even realize carlyle offered the mid depth sockets before I posted the question. Thanks guys!

I picked up some metric snappy's at a pawn shop years ago for 40 bucks..

those mid lengths are my go to on my service truck. so much that I bought the sae too. I use the mid lengths more in 3/8 than shallow and deep combined

I have sunex impact mid lengths on the service truck also. had them about a year and no complaints whatsoever.
