Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a semi full metric set that goes from 8mm to 24mm. I really the new Tekton set, but it only goes to 22mm and there is not matching 24mm wrench. I founs this Gearwrench set (81920) that is what I want. Since I'm not a pro mechanic, if I could spend less for an ok set, that works too. The question is, is there an similar set that goes from 8mm to 24mm without skipping that is cheaper than this Gearwrench set?

We don't offer the singles in Maxtorq. Unless you need the big range, the new wrenches are the way to go in my opinion.

What can you tell us about his set? Obviously not as finished as the Maxtorq, but are they doable for trail kit?

Beowulf,

They are a standard raised panel wrench set. Rarely do we have any trouble with them. It's just a basic, sturdy set.

That's cool. So not super top of the line, but fully functional for a trail kit. Thank you for the quick reply. It is hard to beat the price for a set that I may never use.

If Gearwrench is where your heart is...

The 18 pc Long Pattern #81920 set???

Can be had cheaper at my favorite GearWrench store...Link below...

For $79.88...

Or...

The 22pc Metric Set #81916???

For $111.11...

Both from www.tooldiscounter.com ...

There is nothing wrong with Tekton wrenches...their "Email us a photo of the broken tool, and we'll FedEx you a replacement" warranty, can't be beat...

Any of these sets will float your boat...

You can do better than ok and cheaper too. Since its all imported anyway go for the big value, personally it would he Walmart or HF, same stuff, different box and cheaper.

There is a case and a point where there is some difference but this is at the top end and one pays multiples for it but for the rest of the tools as a commodity very little real world difference despite price. You can search out some select cases but despite as smart and researched as one thinks they are the masters of marketing are one step ahead with another brand to keep it a moving target.
It could be a wrench if we tool something similar to the full polish set at Walmart by Stanley. A lot of the worlds wrenches go thru that exact same die and steel batch under a different label.
Same for a grinder, 3.5#, if you look close, same guard, same casting even the box die cut the same, take them apart, not 25 cents difference between the BD and one of the DeWalts sold in a different store at 2x and maybe more.
Its a 3 card game, I wonder how many wrenches come off that fie are actually sold with the Stanley label? Who makes HF premium wrenches?

The cheap tool and part has its place, we saw some of it in a what part thread. The marketer has fostered this idea, he only sells a few cheap real bottom line parts after all "I would never go there" so I go to NAPA who reaches back and pays even less than I would have for the same part for a chance to add a Napa sticker to the white box and double the price, maybe more.
I got a quote for giggles for a couple air shocks over the counter, 90 something a piece. Same 2 Monroe in a white box 65 a pair shipped. People will swear there is a difference. I have put our own identical product in different bags, have seen them change the filter and the wrapper at the tobacco plant, same for beer, same swill in a different can.

You can make a lot of torx bits from a ton of steel, making it good has become rather economical, As hard as you could try there would be only minor savings to be had from further cheapening the product and would cost but a pinch more to further refine it.
Torx sets sell from about a dollar a bit for a decent one to who knows. 13$ a set at Walmart to 131 a set from one of the top to 300 off a truck.
Bought a metric set 15 yrs ago with the intent or thinking they would be disposable, lets call it semi professional use, I use them on brake calipers in the rust belt on 10 yr old cars, still works today.
Would my opinion be worth anything if I had spent 300 20 yrs ago and be sitting here raving about what a deal it must have been.
The people asking this question could and many should be asking well after they have put a few fingerprints in a Sears sale set. I wrote a thread a while back that sounded like nonsense but what it boiled down to was,,, yes, the premium tool I had was a real helper and really kind of saved the day,,, for a professional who already has a few and faces this type of work a few are real day savers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if you do not already own the basics then asking if a premium tool is right for you is about moot,,,,,,,,,, any tool is right for you.
Any advice that tells you anything other than going to the flea and getting a orange or green handle screwdriver set or Sears super sale set to start with is faulty. The Stanley stuff is really good and you can buy it off the shelf just as needed when getting started.

We have had a chance to test some of this out over a long time. My shop is a class above a homeowner and just under a truck shop. Most of the work is small fastener but a lot of it under a variety of applications.
I could pretty easily do all the big work I do with an additional set of china end wrenches to about 1 1/2 and a 3/4 China socket set for occasional use. Common combo wrenches with a handful of fave extras tossed in, adjustable, Channelok and 1/2 impact does the real socket work with the occasional use of chrome in 3/8 by air ratchet or even hand.

Nobody picks thru my stuff and wonders wtf. Buying a Sears tool set took a lot of pressure off for and allowed me to slide by until I could pick off what I really needed. Some pieces I didn't use but better to find out cheap than to leave it parked after payments and I still use most of it today. I look at some career boxes from sales claim to have 60 large or more in it and aint only but a handful of worn stuff that's not obsolete.
I bought a few 30$ wrenches, can count them on both hands, they had and have their place but a lot was given, picked up another 100 USA wrenches for a dollar a piece and filled in with imports at a dollar. The low cost let us have plentiful wit total disregard for asset value other than utility. I broke half a dozen over the years pounding on them. Never had one fail where I didn't totally abuse it and also in reverse have abused them 1000's of times and they did not fail.
