I have a local SO dealer, but hes a ***** sometimes.. and I just broke a tooth off on my FHF936 (3/8" short flex ratchet, old head style).

Can I send this tool in to snap on for a replacement (maybe they will give me a dual 80?)

They have specific guidelines that need to be followed before sending it in, they can be found by checking there current warranty statement. If you call there customer service, they can help you further, don't just send it in... Lots of threads of late of tools being returned.

Call customer service. They will absolutely handle the replacement for you. As long as you are the original purchaser, you are fine. If you prefer, they will send out a rebuild kit. If you send it in, they'll send back a nice new fine tooth equivalent of what you send in. They will not repair your old ratchet for you. So if it has sentimental value, ask for the rebuild kit. Snap-on customer service is excellent, I'm sure you won't be disapointed.

I needed one done and simply left it with my mechanic and he dealt with the SO *****. It took less than a week and the thing is perfect now. Just a suggestion. :)

It seems like such a waste to send an entire ratchet in when all it needs is a rebuild kit...

Pardon me if I am wrong but isn't Snap On stuff not supposed to break?
I am new here and slightly new to the tool world but why would I buy Snap On if it breaks?
I can take the tools I buy from a lot of places with a lifetime guaranty and exchange them without any questions.
I have never broken a ratchet made by Craftsmen, Mastercraft , SK, Proto or numerous others.
Trust me, I have misused them and abused them with cheaters.
I have broken a few wrenches and had to replace them but, never had an issue or been asked if I was the OP.

You are wrong all tools have the potential to break. As far as why would you buy snap on simple you wouldnt you sound very happy with what you have.

All you need to do is call customer service and explain to them that you need to warranty something and they will either send you a rebuild kit, send you a new ratchet(not likely since all you need is a rebuild) or ask you to send yours in and then they will send you a new one. I can not get a dealer to deal with me in my area because I do not work in a shop so all my business is with customer service and they have never let me down.

Regarding the dual 80, the new SO ratchets have sealed heads, so you can't rebuild 'em. Also there's no release button for the retention ball thing on the drive.

I ended up just having him rebuild it, but my main question was referring to the idea of sending in a stripped ratchet and having snapon send back a brand new D80 style ratchet. I had heard rumors of this but wasnt sure if they would really do it

You are missing some key facts.

definitely have a large friend stand on your feet so you can put some torque on it while tightening a fully tightened bolt. Maybe you'll put it in an irrepairable condition.

pretty sure all tools have capability of breaking.... but guarantee that I have to replace my snap on ones far less than the ones mentions in the quote(aside from proto)... we pay more cause they take more abuse, last longer, and the guy comes straight to our door.... pretty sure this poster was looking for more clarity in how their procedures work since he does not have a local rep redily available.... not a big deal

I have a local rep. I was just wondering If I should "cheat" the system and send the tool in and get a brand new fine tooth Dual 80 in exchange for my old clunky "made in USA" ratchet. I dont want to take advantage of snapon but if thats their policy Its tempting

Just a clue what snap on will do for you if you ask nice. I broke another 3/4 break bar head. I also have a 24 inch 3/4 drive handle and a ratchet head. All totally about $500 bucks. About 5 years ago they changed the shaft diameter on the handles from 13/16 to 15/16. So a new head won't fit in my old handle. So snap on said box the breaker bar head, handle, and ratchet head and we will send you all new stuff.

If someone thinks master craft ratchets are even close to snap on. More power to you.

Snapon only replaces the ratchet if it NEEDS replacing. I had the same ratchet that broke but my pin, handle, and head had stretched so it was replaced with a flf80

boy howdy - don't you know?
tool truck toys tools (esp SO) don't break or wear out.... or have design/manufacturing deficiencies or have any appreciable working limitations.... and they'll put the spring back in your step!!

As I understand things SO's buyer's premium @ retail over their competition is primarily for a 'lifetime' warranty.... esp on consumables.
Why such a high warranty charge?
Good question as SO tools (both SO mfg'd and rebrands) wear and break just like their competition.
Suppose SO is just running the numbers for claims and charging accordingly?

Ok.... so back here online the bottom line for SO topics is
remember the 'don't talk about it and it didn't happen' rule....

I bet the warranty rate of snapon stuff is pretty low, it might seem like a lot from conversation but if you consider how much of it is in service its pretty good. I got one with a spread end, got a china with a broke end, both damaged by extreme means. I have repaired specialty tools, never warrant a socket or wrench but I dont got a lot from there.

I cant imnagine wearing out a new hand ratchet personally, there are a few chores we use it for but any real work a power drive tool is not far behind?

Just for giggles I walked out and looked on a cart, 1 3/8 ratchet and 5 air tools. I can see a 16 yr old wearing out breaking a ratchet but a real journeyman,,, I got to wonder?

I bet a 1/2 and 13mm are the most busted and the 13 for 2 reasons. 1 being so many more big bolts small heads in some apps and got locktite on them and second is being driven on a rusted fastener.

Snappy might stress test the pieces? Almost all of my Cman problems were out of the box.

Have you been talking to yourself for the past hour?!

maybe not - I've been reading but hadn't the chance to reply.
I do agree with:

remember all their talk of power this n power that I start to smell the koolaide.
How could they possibly forget the problems w/bs'ing an old bs'er? *L*
