Sequence of events for inside electrical/construction

The install of a 100 amp sub-panel is underway in my pole barn (30x40x12) with 2/12 scissor trusses. My plan is to use girts on the inside placed over the 6x6s to support the walls (7/16 OSB). The ceiling will be metal. I will eventually install a 2 post lift. Wall insulation will be done by local contractor; ceiling panels and blown in insulation will be done by Shirk Pole Barn (they constructed pole barn); OSB walls will be installed by me.


My plan is in this order:

boxes/electrical wiring
cable/Ethernet
outside lights
insulation (walls)
ceiling panels and blown in insulation
OSB walls
inside lights
garage door opener
2 post lift
heater - undecided if electric or propane

I want all electrical concealed by the walls and ceiling and want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything.

For example - should the garage door opener be installed prior to ceiling panels? Anything I should run, conduits, etc?

That's pretty much what I did.

But, I did a few temporary outlets and some inside lights first.

I needed to get lights working so I could work in the evening.

I wanted a few live outlets for tools. I was running extension cords from my house.

Garage door openers have the eyes so you can prewire with door bell or thermostat wire, 2 conductors from each side of the door and one pair to where the wall switch will be. Commercial openers require 4 wire for the up, down, stop features as well as the wire for the eyes. Speakers, security system at each opening, internet, coax for cable or antenna and antenna wire for the radio. Other than that you got it!

As far as LED lights- will I require an electrical box at each location?

My shop is 30x40x12 with scissor trusses and 100 amp panel. So here's the current plan:

Install outside lights and outlets

Install electrical including outlets every 6' (not sure on height)

Prewire for up to 2 ceiling fans and garage door opener

What am I overlooking? Any suggestions?

are you subject to permits/inspections...if so be careful to not cover things due to be inspected.

If needed, use nail plates on those wires running through wood that may be nailed later in the game.

I would place your outlets above or below the 48" line, so as to only cut one sheet of OSB per outlet. I also installed 2 duplex outlets every where, not a singe outlet, except 240 or specific items, perhaps lift or door openers.

I thought I would run most most of the electrical wire in the void created between the posts and outside walls and will add wall plates as needed.

How about blank conduits? Any suggestions?

Plan for future expansions,conduit or other protective wire/cable runs? Better to sit and think before covering up now.

Thoughts on initial lay out. Inside outlets will be one quad about every 8 feet. May add cord reel near lift- ceiling or wall?

Code requires wires to be at least 1 1/2 inches away from finished surfaces.
I know my local inspector would not accept this.

My scissor trusses are 4’ on center. Any suggestions on flush mounting 4’ LED shop lights to metal ceiling since the the mounting eyelets don’t span 4 feet? FWIW - it will be a metal ceiling flush mounted to bottom of trusses.

I'd simply add some blocking between the bottom chord of the trusses.

Once that is in place, some screws and fender washers through the top of the light body will hole the fixture up.

I have 4 bulb 8' fixtures in my garage so it makes it easy to hit a mounting point.

Thanks - will have to keep 8 footers as an option. Are your lights linked with one another or individual outlets for each? I've seen the 4' lights use 6' plugs and can be linked up to 4 in a sequence.

Thanks - Not totally opposed to hanging them from chains but don't want a shoddy look - would have to see pics of this. Is it normal to link these together like lights (4x for one plug) or an outlet for each one? In my case maybe 20 lights if 4'.
