Is SEU usable for cable between the overhead service drop and meter box and the meter box and panel inside?

Will 4/0 3 conductor do and handle 200A?

What advantage does the SER have?

The NEC allows it. Some utilities do not. I won't run it outside, Sun breaks down the outer jacket over the years. Conduit lasts much longer.

Never been fond of SE cable, and PG&E does not allow it here either, any SE cable installs around here were done 60+ years ago, that being said there is a lot of it installed with a good record, conduit is much better as Bert said in the quote above.


My house had it from 1957 to 1980, glad it is gone.

What we have right now looks like it. House built in 41'. Outer covering gone and looks like diagonal wire sheath showing.

I know SER would be better, but SEU in PVC would be better protected.

Will 4/0 fit in 2" PVC?

SER is a different product having three insulated conductors & one bare grounding conductor, just do it right & pull 3 conductors in pipe or use the SE as intended.

I personally always pipe out the top of the meter on a overhead service and just use XHHW conductors inside the pipe. Doing it this way gives you a way better water tight seal at the hub. When using seu cable for the riser, i dont care how tight you get the connector on the hub, it will eventuality leak, then they put a glob of duct seal on it. Which looks like ****.

I do how ever use a SE cable out the bottom of the meter to go inside to the panel.

Yep, my 60+ yo outer covering is about gone. 3M electrical tape !! Some day I will get it replaced and probably the fuse box (Wadsworth) !

Old se cable held up really well when most houses were painted. The cable got painted also and it protected it.

If the attachment point of the cable from the pole is not 10' above the ground, to meet code, you will have to install a mast.
