This is what my block layer left me with. Says I didnt say I wanted a steel frame door. I say he didnt ask. Either way the rough opening is 88 inches tall. Clearly the header is wrong.

Sorry for the post yesterday on this asking how to fix it. I couldnt figure out how to delete that post.Anyway, this is what the block layer left me. The door height is 88 inches. Contractor building the 2nd floor told me the guy must have been an idiot for putting in the header like this. Weird thing is he had 2 headers but only installed the one like this. He said he is not coming back to fix this. I am taking him to small claims court. Is there anyone who would agree that this is completely wrong installation of the header? Appreciate any help on how I can fix this? Thanks

Re: How do I fix this?

no pics showing. but an opening to tall is far easier to deal with than an opening to short.
Maybe your block layer will come back I fill in above your door when it's in place, or you can creatively fill it in with something. if you're using a 7' door, there's very little to deal with . you can hang the door tight to the top & pour a curb at the bottom even

Re: How do I fix this?

Most Steel door frames are set in place prior to block work.
Have mason remove block and redo.
As stated a custom one may work. Discuss with Mason

IMHO, This looks like a failure to communicate,or maybe the mason did not read the prints.

Either pad it down to the height you want or tear it out and move the header down.
What does the outside look like?

Perhaps after you file your claim, the block mason will choose to settle with you and stay out of court.

I assume the question is about the direction of the lintel? Do you know who the manufacturer is so you could look up how it should be installed? Can you see any markings on it? Sometimes they’re marked “TOP” to indicate the proper installation. Just looking at the dimensions of it, it would appear that it should be turned 90 degrees. Best thing may be to contact another mason, or a few, and see if they would be willing to come out and give you their opinion.

First one to answer correctly as far as Im concerned. Yes the other one he did not install is marked TOP on the top edge of it. It should have been mounted 90 degrees up so that he word TOP would be hidden in the mortar. My contractor called the mason an idiot for not acknowledging that he put it in wrong. The rest of the work he did looks great though.

Did he leave the lintel out ?

It appears he used sillstone for a lintel instead of steel.
I would contact your local building inspector and see what he says.
All I ever saw was steel for all lintels, doors or windows

Thanks. I have 2 other masons ready to go with me to state that the guy put the header in wrong. Even I know it was put in wrong. I guess he didnt understand the big letters at the top saying TOP. All I am asking is for what it costs me to have it done right.

No he put it in on its side instead of on the ends.It is 90 degrees off. The word TOP is actually inside the wall instead of being covered with mortar

Measure the width, as it should be set in the wall. Is it half the thickness of the wall? Was he, maybe, supposed to install both side by side? I install door automation, so I see lintels quite often. I have seen 2 side by side above door openings.

You've mentioned your contractor a few times. Who hired the mason?
