Hi all. I have an all brick garage (attached) that has no service (man) door and I'd like to put one in. The brick, I'm sure, is the kind with three holes in them so I'd imagine that once the brick is cut, half the bricks will reveal their middle hole, cut in half. So, I'm thinking I can cover this up by taking the door outer trim piece, like a 1 by six (or so) and cover up most of the brick, by bringing the edge of the 1 by, out to the face of the brick.

All the brick garages I've seen with a service door has a less wide trim, so some of the edge of the brick is shown, probably for aesthetics.

Also, I can't forget the lentil.

Anything else I need to know before starting this project?

Never done it but I don't see why not. You will have to put a steel angle header over the door. No reason you cant run the same steel down the sides.

The door will come with a trim called "brick mold" for this very reason.
You will need a 4x4 angle iron to support the brick above the door.
Length should be 16 inches more thaan the door width.
(8 inchs per side.)
Grind out the mortar, slip the angle iron into place then remove the brick below it.

All good to know. Contractors I've contacted weren't even close to knowing this. Makes sense. Thanks

It's not a bad job to do. Just make sure you put the lintel in place before you remove all of the brick below it and not the other way around.

I am thinking of the same for my garage. Brick sitting on top of a block foundation.
I was wondering about the sill.
My other door has a formed and poured concrete sill that the door sits on.
Was thinking I may have do a sill similar or the door will just sit on the first coarse of block.

I think I would fill the block under the door and then possibly lay a 2x6 pt sill for the door to sit on vekster. Just my 2 cents though.
