Had a couple of things happening around the neighborhood lately ,and it got me thinking of the security of the back/service door on my garage.
Heres what i came up with for my 2-stall attached

what i did is use 2 2x3 angle iron for the uprights
used a 1x3 angle iron on the floor, put 3 anchors in the floor ,welded feet on the uprights ,anchored each upright thru the feet and the plate on the floor, used 4 5/16 lag bolts on the uprights to the wall, cut out the notches on the uprights with a plasma cutter
made the frame from some 1/2 inch rebar
drilled holes thru the plate in the floor into the concrete so when the rebar frame is slid into the uprights as it drops down in the notches it also goes thru the plate in the floor down into the concrete a few inches

This is just what i came up with some stuff i had laying around
Lets see what you came up with to help others with ideas for securing their doors too

How do you open the door from the outside?? I've always been a fan of simple steel frames and doors, and cameras.

No special doors, just cameras with digital recording. i can look back for months!

I can understand the door frame.

I also had B&E (to a back window)

Camera's are nice. but you need expensive ones or the images are worthless. you see a person/shade inside braking and taking your stuff. but for the police the images are useless. no identification, rather than black hoodie & blue jeans. maybe if he looks right at the camera you can see if a mustache and glasses or not.

So you get verry frustrated. your door/window is broken, your stuff is stolen, you see a man on video and police can't use footage.

I rather invest in verry loud alarm, and retardant entrance...
If they kick the door open from the first hit. they are in the same time asthe alarm start ringing. So they have time to grab what they can.
When they hit the door and the alarms starts ringing but the door is not open, they have to hit it 4 or 5 times to get entrance, while it is allready ringing. they run...

My insurance covers all damage done by B&E, but don't cover 100% value of the stolen items. for instance they stole you floorjack. you bought for 400euro. thay take the value without taxes (21%) than they devaluate it as you ownd it for a long time and used it...
So you get some money. but for sure not enough to buy you a new floorjack...

But if they brake my garagedoor to make an entrance, all cost to repair the damage is covered.

It is a back door, so i think 'normal' entrence by that door is not an issue.

Can't see in, move on. Break in, steal stuff, I get it replaced 100% by good quality insurance.

Jim

PS Notice the door sensor for my alarm system? I have one on the garage door as well.

I used a commercial steel door and reinforced jamb with an extra deadbolt, and bars on the window. My garage doors are older - solid 2X's rather than the thin steel foam core they sell now.

I also spent time taking photographs of every drawer in my toolbox, as well as photos from around my shop to make sure I don't forget anything if I do get broken into.

Exactly^^^^^^^^
We have cameras in the lobbys of our office buildings at work, and have had that happen alot of times. All you see is someone with a hoodie or if they steal a laptop or something and put it in there purse or a bag, all you see is someone carrying a bag, can't prove they are the ones that took it.

Alarm system is the way to go.

The guy next to me had his garage burn down , his insurance would pay 80% on his tools because they were used . so he listed ever socket price per socket, then when he got his check he bought sets of sockets and he came out all right....

I agree on the steel frame. I don't know why they still even sell those thin wood frames for external doors.

I gotta say I'm surprised by the responses
Sure my insurance will cover things if they were stolen but it won't take back that sense of violation when someone tears through your stuff and takes what they want, or pay me back when I need to use my tools and I'm waiting on a insurance settlement
Sure I have an alarm on both doors but if I'm not there I figure a theif has anywhere from 1-5 or as many as 10 minutes before police respond
This lock system should take at least 3-5 kicks to get the door in ,if it don't open in 1-2 kicks they will realize its not just gonna bust right open and hopefully go steal someone else's stuff who wasn't ready for 'em

The Kung-Fu lab is my shop security door backup... You can't get near the house without her growling. Unless you show up in my truck... she hears that coming for a block or two and doesn't even wake up.

We use a regular door with a dead bolt, I have blinds in the window and don't leave my garage door open all day long for people to look in.
