Hey all,

We currently been living in a trailer that is right on the road where are property is located. We hired a electrician and all he needs is the service wire to the house and he can start to wire the inside and what not. My job is to lay conduit almost a half mile to the house on the other side of the property.

What do I need for wire(type? Single phase) at this length and should I be concerned about the transformer on the pole getting power out there so far away?

You might need to see the power company about setting a pole and transformer on the property. You would likely have to provide an easement to them to cross the property.

Ya, Call the power company and ask what they would require for that distance. If no transformer, you will need some big wires.

Just had National grid on site and they're going to get some pricing for me. The exact distance to the project site (house) is;

467ft from current meter road side to project(500ft needed).
585ft from pole to project.

Apparently the transformer on the pole needs to be updated. We already have a pole on the property.

As stated above, get the utility to run primary closer to the new house. It's not practical to run 240v a half mile. As far as copper goes, nobody runs copper very far underground, 99% is aluminum.

*edit, I see your distance is only 600' now. That can be done with secondary but I would still look into running primary.

wow the distance really changed on this

2640' down to 585'. Thats a big difference...

It really depends on load.

Still i would set a pad mount or pole mount trany closer and go from there.

Why does the electrician need the service run to house before he can wire the inside? I wired my own new house and the power company wouldn't even hook up until I passed at least one inspection.

Does the electrician want to install a temporary service for power before wiring the inside?
