Service manuals for a 1998 Chevy k2500?

I figure service manuals are tools in a way so I’m posting this here. I was looking on eBay for service manuals for what was my grandfather’s old K2500 4x4 and found some listings for the hard copies, but they were hundreds of dollars compared to cd and usb versions for much less. Has anyone here went the digital route for manuals? I’m leary of the security aspect of receiving a usb in the mail and just plugging it in, but for $40 compared to $400 I’m tempted to risk it. I’ve read reviews of the Haynes and Chilton manuals and hear they leave out some stuff, but I’d like to have the ability to do just about anything needed to the truck. The only downside in their description on eBay is that wiring diagrams are limited to the C1500 diagrams.

The digital copies are pretty much all pirated, if you are OK with that.

Will you use it digitally or just print off your own copy?

It's been a bunch of years, but I always found Haynes quite good for most stuff.

I don't believe there is a lot different in the wiring, from a 1500. The 4L80 and 4L60 have a couple differently pinned wires, plus input speed for the 80.

It's been a bunch of years, but I always found Haynes quite good for most stuff.

Probably more digitally than anything. Shop is about a 30 second walk from the computer. Morally, I’m on the fence about it, but price is a big factor. I do want the actual books at some point along with the transmission specific manual.

Yeah I figured there wasn’t much difference, but we all know how manufacturers can be.

I like having both the hard copy and PDF... when I'm looking at a manual to figure stuff out or trying to learn something out of it I like the actual book better because it's quicker to flip through and bookmark pages. When I'm doing the work if the manual is needed I like to be able to quickly print the needed pages from the PDF so you don't have to go digging through the manual and also keep it from getting messed up.

For Haynes it's a hit and miss. It is great that its straight to the point and easier to get than the factory manuals but some of them they lump too many generations or models of vehicles together when they are very different and it usually covers one really well and the rest are thrown in like they assume they're the same.

Haynes is ok for basic maintenance IMO and fine for a typical DIYer who is going to do brakes, spark plugs, valve cover gasket.... but I wouldn't try to rebuild something like a manual transmission, or do electrical troubleshooting, for a modern vehicle with one. I gave up on them decades ago when doing a cylinder head on a Civic and since then have only bought FSMs. Typical mechanical portion of a modern FSM is 2X+ as thick as a Haynes, plus the FSM will usually have even more electrical content than mechanical.

I've got about the same thoughts. Most of the stuff they cover you can do just fine without reading in.

Just about all libraries have free access to service info. You can go on their website and look whatever you want up. Mine has chilton for free. I use it all the time because I'm more then a DIYer but don't do enough volume to justify a monthly subscription. Go to your local library's website and look for auto repair under digital resources or something similar. I don't even need a library card, it just asks for my zip code. Libraries have a ton of good resources that most don't take advantage of.

I had the 4-volume service manual for my 1998 back in the day when you could buy them from GM (2003-ish).

These days I purchase the CD versions as I have a PC and 32" monitor in the shop for reference. I see that they are available at Rock Auto for $23.99. They do also list the Detroit Iron reprinted paper copy for $237.99 if you would like a hard copy. IIRC, the cover shown in the listing is the cover on the genuine GM ones I had BITD.

We did buy the Detroit Iron CD version of a 70 Catalina manual. It appears to be legit.

You can always buy the electronic version and take it to a printer and have them make a paper copy.

I have the FSM PDF w links for my Tacoma, and a less linked version for my older RAV4. I forget how legit the one for my Acura is, but it's very convoluted to use. All are great, occasionally I print out for my use, but spend more time helping others with their problems.

I've bought pirated (Jaguar) service manuals on a CD before and they were fine. I do much better with hard copy so brought the CD to a copy center and had the whole shebang printed and bound. I was in a peripheral to printing business at the time so paid only a wholesale rate. That might get expensive these days.
Chilton(consumer) manuals are suitable for outhouse use, Haynes only slightly better. Either the factory one or a Motor manual which is less vehicle specific but still very useful.
A 1998 Chevy truck is a pretty simple device. Personally I'd try online resources and print what I need on an as needed basis.
Nice old truck. All of those that lived around my Chicago home have long since melted by now.

I’d like to be able to do any type of repair on it including rebuilding the drivetrain. I’d like to have all the correct torque specs and processes at hand instead of having to filter through potentially incorrect info on the internet. It’s had a pretty hard life even though it’s relatively low miles.

Since about 2000 all you can get OEM is digital, it use to be on CD's now it's subscription service.
GM has nothing in print or online for that pick up except a emissions diag manual for $50.

I would recommend the charm.li link he provided. I pay for service info from several sources, but I use charm.li in the field for anything older because you can search so fast.

Get the electronic version. If you ever get deep enough into it that you feel like you need the service manual you can print that section.

Chances are you won't use it much.

Been retired for quite a few years now but MOTOR Service manuals were always the best. Chilton books were alright if they were the professional versions
