Service, Meter Pan & Disconnect

i live in new orleans, la
is there a max/mim distance between the meter pan and the main disconnect?
is emt or plastic pipe best to connect the two?

Rules vary depending on where you live, but generally the main disconnect is supposed to be "as close as possible" to the meter. I assume the disconnect is on the outside of your house? I know they do that often in southern states but it's not very common elsewhere.

You can probably find some good information on the website of your local electric utility - nowadays most of them have an installation guide or manual online, it may be able to tell you what the maximum allowed distance is.
