I have one in the garage of the house we bought last year. It was covered by boards that recess into a ledge when we bought the property, and I only removed one board to look into it once. It was dry thankfully, but no steps or permanent ladder. Don't know if I'll ever use it, haven't really thought much about it. This is in the attached 2-car garage to the house. We also have a 28' x 48' garage / pole barn, and a new 32' x 56' pole barn just built. All my tools, etc are in the "upper" barn. Unless I set up and oil change only station, doubt I'll use it.

We had one in our company shop years ago. Fully concrete, always cold in the winter, needed an assistant to back over it, only used for changing oil. We kept it covered with plywood when not in use but eventually one of my uncles fell in it and was injured. After that, it got filled in and now we have mobile column lifts.

This is such a great web site, never considered a pit. Painted, lights, dry and (out of the way) sounds great to me. Alternative, build a monster shop with a good econical heat source and then a lift?

I have often wondered if I could or should put a Grease Pit in my own garage.

The answer always comes up, Not Now.

I’m still planning on making a pit in a shop we’re building. Mostly for semi truck service and for backing semi trailers over for servicing. I remember visiting a Swift hub years ago and all the trucks leaving the shop area drove over a pit with a tech to give a last inspection. I can see doing oil changes on lighter vehicles but trucks are my primary need.

I just moved to Florida. I got an oil change and they told me not to get out of my car. One guy got down into the pit while another guy at the same time handled the paperwork. Before I got my credit card out, the job was done!

I would love to have a pit in my garage. 6 vehicles give the rhino ramps and cardboard creeper a workout....and me!
