Set my overall on fire!

Yesterday I was grinding for most part of the day in the garage. Obviously my overall heats up as the sparks shower over arms, legs, etc as I'm working, but at one stage the heat increased to a level I have not experienced from grinding sparks. As I looked at my sleeve I saw flames! I quickly downed the grinder and started patting the area. Luckily I managed to put it out without causing me any burns. On closer inspection I saw that an old paint stain is what caught fire.

Lessons learnt:

Have a separate overall for painting and other work.
Keep a fire extinguisher at bay.

That isn't normal? :bounce:

Couple weeks ago I had a brand new "garage" shirt. Fired up the grinder and shirt went up in flames in about 4 seconds. :shocking:

That was a record for short lived shirt! Catch the foam sweat band on my welding helmet on fire a while back. I noticed because motlen foam started dripping in front of my face as I was welding.

Yeah I'm not allowed to work in the garage anymore unless I use some of the el'cheapo shirts my wife gets me for like $2. I keep catching on fire and ruining them.

Even with my welding jacket on I still seem to find the one spot that isn't covered. ****. :lol_hitti

Done that more than a few times.... While doing any welding / torch work / heavy grinding, I'm always on the lookout for the tell-tale "I'm on fire" signs - like when your leg suddenly gets warm 'cause your pant leg is on fire.

That's why many companies specify flame resistant materials for their coveralls.Ours are flame and arc rated. They'll still catch once they're older and stained but usually just melt a hole in them.I was under a truck last winter that the air dryer froze up.Heating up the dryer with a butane torch.I stood the torch in the snow to do something and it tipped and was burning my coveralls without me realizing it.Melted a hole in the material but they didn't catch fire.

set my pants on fire once, right in front of my crotch....of course, the first reaction is to pat it out quickly........followed by lower abdominal cramps because I basically just slapped myself in the nuts several times.

When racing stock cars a while back, we always used the winter to rebuild or build a new car. So I was good for setting some clothing on fire once a winter. The funny part was that my ex saw me out the window one time, rolling around in the snow to put out the fire. She didn't even stop her phone conversation. Maybe she was hoping for a Darwin for me. I woulda broke out the marshmellows!

My daughter, who now does torch work melting glass, says the best stuff to wear is cotton cuz it won't melt and drip on you like synthetics.

These days I haven't had the pleasure of setting my clothes on fire while welding. I guess you do grow wiser - if you're lucky.

my worker torched everything under a workbench wile trying to straighten a 1'' bar.

he did not see wat he had done, the fire grew, and when i walked in, ihosed everyhting down, and he was like, how did that happen, why was that stuff there....well, it was there before he worked there. dummy

lets just say, he stuck his hands in a moving pulled to find a problem, and got his hand caught and broke his wrist, the machine turned off so he thought it was safe to put the flashlight right up against the pulley, well....a photoeye was triggered, and ****, his hand was pulled in, as he pulled it out, he broke his wrist.

because he violated the safety rules, lockout violation.....he was terminated.

turns out, this wasnt the first time he stuck his hand in a moving pulley. that time the pulley(4 v-belts on a 40HP electric motor) ripped 4 fingers almost off letting them dangle.... they were re attached.

this time he was fired for it.

just a little safety lesson for all of you, when a few guys lose their jobs, people start to take it seriously.

if your always getting burned, maybe its time to try a better prevention plan. or maybe welding isnt for you.

Done that so many times. All of my hoodies have the sleeves burnt just above the cuffs, from using grinders. I just put them out and keep on with what I was doing. Some people, just don't learn. Doh!!!

I had a friend that drove a truck for a company that moved heavy machinery, anything from huge machine tools to transformers etc. Apparently they used to say that his employer was good at what he did as most of his crew still had all of their fingers and toes!

I may have set myself on fire once or twice, even with a leather apron on its amazing where sparks can get to.
